Amazing and well written film, the idea of setting up the trilogy that way is truly original and beautiful.

It was ok. Never really kept me engaged. If I was a pre teen/teenager I might like it more.

Updated review score from 2 to 3.5 stars. Verdict: Worth the watch but it feels like if Disney had made a horror movie. I don't know why I was this harsh on the movie in 2021. Probably because I was sick and tired of the gay stuff. I still am but I had another objective look at the movie besides that. It's a fine slasher with twists and turns though it takes almost to the end of the movie to really get the slasher part going. It clearly tries to imitate the Scream series which I think it fails (Scream is pretty much my favorite movie series, period) but the effects are good, the story is good and the acting is fine too. The only two things that truly annoyed me was the happy go lucky attitude of the movie (power of friendship and all that BS you see in teenager shows) and the gay stuff.

My quick rating - 5.5/10. I will say I was expecting more from this. It did a decent job of emulating "Scream" but as far as really giving you that nostalgic '90s feel, it missed the mark quite a bit. Sure, AOL chat on a dinosaur of a computer was nice, but as far as the characters? Completely off in hairstyle, clothes, etc. They did manage to throw a TON of music at you from the 90s, so grab the soundtrack if you need a mix tape. Well, minus one gripe there, Firestarter by Prodigy came out in 1996....OOPS. The start really had my hopes up, even if it was literally a complete carbon copy of how "Scream" began. After that, it somewhat rolls downhill, though introducing you to characters who I personally couldn't get behind, living or not, minus one, the nerd (Benjamin Flores Jr.) The movie is paced well enough and does throw some creative gore kills your way, I am just unsure about the three-parter running out of chronological order. Guess time will tell about how that works its way out. At least they were somewhat unforgiving about the teen cast and the usual let everyone live, you would get in the other half that this movie is spawned from "Stranger Things." It is clearly evident that those two were the main inspirations here, and this doesn't quite live up to either of them. It also is not a disaster in the slightest. This doesn't reinvent the genre, nor did it take me back to the 90s slashers, either, and that is why I may be a bit down. I expected either one or the other and got neither. I'll still be checking out the rest, and as of now, part two is available. I am just really hoping this isn't the highlight of the bunch.

The first in a series of a multi time point horror story. Based in the mid 90s. It's actually really good, I'm looking forward to the next part. It's a Netflix series so it is high production value, no shonky quality here.

A fun and bloody throwback to ‘90s horror. The movie has a cool style, a great soundtrack, and some intense moments. The story isn’t perfect, but it keeps you interested, and the characters grow on you. A solid start to the trilogy and a good watch for slasher fans.
