I’m a big fan of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and I always wanted him to reprise his role but I had absolutely zero hype or expectations going in because I lost trust in Marvel a while ago and also it’s a Deadpool movie so I’m conditioned to take it lightly. The movie had some really high highs but also a lot of classic mediocre moments that Marvel movies consistently exhibit these days. Full Spoilers Ahead. A unique action scene with Deadpool using each skeletal remain of Logan to brutally kill a bunch of TVA soldiers in extravagant fashion? What an absolutely banger way to start the movie! I really enjoyed the humour throughout, I thought it was clever with some quick witted punchy slurs that I’ve never heard before, and the meta commentary on Marvel studios was actually fun. However there’s 2 issues I had with it. First, even though it’s expected of a Deadpool movie, the humour undercuts a lot of serious moments and runs into the problem of turning the whole movie into a gag. Part of this is also a script issue, it does not balance well the important emotional beats or plot moments with the comedic sequences. Second, though I really appreciated the tight humour, since it is constant and doesn’t give it a rest, for the majority of it I was just smiling. I was doing a movie marathon in the theatre this day, so I watched The Angry Birds Movie 2 (2019) first and it actually made me laugh out loud way more times than Deadpool that I had to try containing myself. A strange comparison indeed but it brought me perspective on how humour is best delivered in waves rather than a constant barrage. Now here are my thoughts on Wolverine. Hugh Jackman is so goddamn perfect for the role, for a character who is always disgruntled and brooding, he exudes such a strong gravitating personality. His interactions with Deadpool were perfect, they really nailed the buddy cop dynamic duo. And when Wolverine puts on his mask, holy fuck that has to be one of the best superhero costume moments in comic book movie history. It could’ve easily been seen as goofy but it‘s got an insanely cool aura, especially with that one slow mo scene of him and Deadpool jumping out of a bus. Also 55yo Jackman is jacked!!! As to the character development and story of Wolverine, that was completely fumbled. I’m confused as to why he’s considered the worst multiversal Wolverine, the explanation that he was out drinking when all the X-men were wiped out is pretty lame, how did it happen and what impact could Wolverine have had is not clearly shown. None of it seemed convincing to me so I just didn’t feel invested in his emotional development. I think both his and Deadpool’s personal emotional arcs get a bit sidelined and lost in the plot. X23’s arrival in the void also felt a bit cheap to me. Now to comment on all the cameos. Chris Evan’s bait and switch from Captain America to Johnny Storm was fantastic, pun intended. And OH MY GOD, I don’t think I have ever audibly exclaimed this much in a theatre when I saw Wesley Snipe’s Blade, I actually could not believe my eyes and it was the most hype inducing scene of the whole movie for me. Unfortunately he along with Elektra, Gambit and X23 are criminally under-utilised with just a single action scene dedicated to them which was very poorly shot with shaky cam, fighting in a bland greyish toned sequence with lame cgi and no bombastic moments. I also did not like the multiple Deadpools cameo, it was cool to see different versions but also felt like a pointless nonsensical gag. Cassandra Nova was a terrifying villain that does bring some unpredictable stakes but her motives are underdeveloped. I was so glad to see Matthew Macfadyen from Succession, he killed the role of the snobbish and slimy Mr. Paradox. In conclusion, I felt like the movie was a bit all over the place with a couple of blue ball moments which doesn’t restore any of my faith in Marvel but I still had quiet an enjoyable time with some awesome fan service moments and it’s really satisfying to see Hugh Jackman back and introduced to the MCU.
