Where to Watch Movida del 76
- This is a perfect snapshot of High School kids in 1976. The non-stop rock music soundtrack, the clothes, cars, hair, language and yes, the smoking and drinking and teen peer pressure, absolutely everything in the movie is utterly pitch perfect. Kids just driving around, hanging out at the poolhall and park, going to an awkward dance, not sure where life is going to lead them. It's a celebration of the end of the school year, full of trepidation for what the next year will bring. The cast is a literal parade of future A-List stars. Far to numerous to list here. Half the fun of the movie is checking off all the kids you recognize from todays movies. Anyways, is this movie good? There's not much story honestly, it's just a snapshot of a full day in 1976 from the perspective of the teens who lived it. Fun, nostalgic, enjoyable, but I'm not sure it's a great movie for just anyone to enjoy. If you are interested in how we lived as teens in the 1970's then check it out, or if you want to see a pile of extremely young actors you know, give it a go. But you're not going to take away any profound message or feel-good morality or anything. There's not really a clear antagonist as such. Anyways, I do reccomend this film, for what it is, I found it enjoyable.
- Dazed and Confused has me feeling nostalgia for a time I never experienced. It's a no plot, sort of "check out these characters talking a lot" movie. Not super funny or suspenseful. But it was still fun. It brings you back to the exciting and ridiculous social dynamics you experienced in high school in a very authentic and insightful package. You just don't get these kinds of social dynamics in adult life anymore, probably for the best, but it's nice to have a window to those feelings. Dazed and Confused captures your attention with its huge cast characters, allowing it to skillfully move from one setting and set of characters to the next with perfect timing. It has lots of interesting, but very high school, scenarios condensed into a tight package. It has quite a bit of salaciousness and violence to give it some edge. The movie focuses on new freshman and new seniors. This is a clever move that allows it to create a narrative out of the cycle of growth and coming of age through peer pressure. We see freshmen trying to play their own games of sex, mischief, and being cool. Then we see the seniors playing those games in a different, more developed way. And we see how the seniors guide these freshmen down a path to become the new seniors, eventually. A self-perpetuating cycle. Dazed and Confused gives you an interesting world to revisit and live in for a little while. It's great that it's a period piece of the director's own nostalgic time in high school. I think that gives it a timelessness. Also, a timelessness in that there are simply some constants in the high school experience.
- The producers never seem to think we'll notice that a bunch of high school seniors are 30 years old, and all drive high-end American muscle cars in mint condition. It seems the seniors are all actually gay with the amount of time they spend lusting over male 8th grader ass to pummel with their cricket bats.
