During the Zhengde era of the Ming Dynasty, Geng Lie, a centurion of the Imperial Guard, was demoted to head constable after the assassination of an imperial envoy. At this time, a series of murders occurred in Ningchang Prefecture, affecting the Prince of Ning's birthday banquet, and Geng Lie was ordered to investigate. A wealthy merchant who presented a painting to the Prince of Ning was poisoned, and the female assassin who had tried to kill the imperial envoy reappeared. All of this made Geng Lie realize that the storm brewing in Ningchang Prefecture would change the course of the Ming Dynasty.
