A real curio from the early '60s. A sneaky modern riff on Othello penned by the blacklisted writer Paul Jarrico, the story takes place over one night in a super-elegant jazz club in a penthouse suite high over Manhattan. The film is photographed in striking black-and-white and populated with real jazz figures who act a little but mostly just jam, namely Dave Brubeck and Charles Mingus (the real actors include the great Patrick McGoohan and Richard Attenborough). This thing really moves along. Whenever the plot threatens to bog down an ad hoc band suddenly forms and starts up a number, and everyone stops to enjoy the show. A blistering bongo solo from Brit Barry Morgan, playing a South American ace named Paco O'Toole, is a toe-tapping highlight. The whole enterprise is quite a novelty. I'm not the biggest fan of jazz music, but this thing really swings, daddy-O. It's also one of the rare films from 1962 that features two characters smoking a joint!
