Charlotte Wells builds the film around the realization that childhood doesn’t give us the full picture of the people raising us, allowing a simple father-daughter vacation to grow more emotionally revealing with every passing scene. Frankie Corio is astonishingly natural as Sophie, while Paul Mescal puts in a performance of unmeasurable sensitivity as Calum, expressing more about his character through silence than most actors could with pages of dialogue. Together, they create a relationship that feels completely authentic. The film’s emotional power comes from everything the two characters choose not to explain. Wells never interrupts the story to tell the audience how to feel, trusting us to recognize the significance of moments that might have once seemed ordinary. Experiencing the story through Sophie's perspective gives every interaction an aching sense of hindsight. Aftersun also never tries to give background on Calum’s struggles because it understands something about depression many films don't: it doesn’t always come with an explanation. Charlotte Wells resists the temptation to reduce him to one defining cause, and I found that uncertainty far more honest than a neatly packaged answer ever could have been. Every scene feels like Sophie searching through fragments, trying to understand a man she loved completely but never fully knew. It's a beautiful reminder that growing older doesn't just change how we remember our childhood—it changes how we understand the people who shaped it. Few films have explored that realization with as much honesty or compassion as Aftersun.
- stokeyTX24 de octubre de 2024Honestly, I didn't care for it much on my first viewing. Revisiting this film after my father's death made it hit totally different. I was not expecting to be as emotionally floored as I was the second go-around. I wonder if I'll feel the same after a few more years pass.
- Kevin Ward5 de julio de 2025Remarkable directorial debut debut from Charlotte Wells. Devastatingly subtle in it’s storytelling conveying a deep feeling of sadness throughout the film, not in the moments that appear on screen, but moreso in the moments that don’t. The moments we do see are mostly joyous, depicting Sophie (Franke Corio) and her dad, Colum (Paul Mescal) on a holiday at a luxury resort in Turkey. However, as we’re given minuscule glimpses of Sophie’s future, namely her looking back at this holiday with her dad. Wonderfully crafted by Wells and I was completely enamored by Corio’s performance. I will be looking forward to seeing more from both of them. Highly recommend Aftersun. It’s been lingering on my thoughts every since the credits rolled.
