Good movie, the concept is very interesting but I feel like the story was rushed.

The Giver (2014) attempts to bring Lois Lowry’s beloved novel to life, but the translation to screen feels uneven. The story’s profound themes of memory, individuality, and freedom are present, yet the film struggles to fully capture their depth within its limited runtime. Some narrative issues remain underdeveloped, leaving the emotional weight of the source material diluted. Visually, however, the movie is inspiring: the gradual shift from monochrome to color is a striking metaphor for awakening, and the cinematography often conveys a sense of wonder. The performances, led by Jeff Bridges and Meryl Streep, lend gravitas, but the overall execution doesn’t quite elevate the film beyond its surface appeal. While it introduces younger audiences to the novel’s ideas, The Giver ultimately feels like it needed more time and nuance to truly resonate. It’s a thoughtful attempt, but not a definitive adaptation.

A lovely depiction of a fight between Humanism and Machiavellianism. Maybe not the best adaptation of all time, and the book is definitely better, but this is a thoroughly enjoyable film and beautifully communicates what it means to be human.

The book is truly awful. The film follows suit. BRAVO! For once... A movie that keeps with the feeling that the book gives you. Fantastic!

Jeff Bridges was awesome, as always. Other performances were flat. The movie was shallow compared to the book, but I liked the storytelling changes and had fun.

I thought I hit the jackpot because it's not usually free, but the sound doesn't work and it's black and white 😭
