Runaway Ratings & Reviews
- Stian Andreassen17 April 2026Written and directed by Michael Crichton, it has a kind of 80s pastels soft cyberpunk feel, where Tom Selleck is the spiritual second cousing to Del Spooner and Rick Deckard. His job is chasing malfunctioning robots – so called "runaways". Gene Simmons is a super charismatic deranged villain, who carries a lot of the movie, and brings an almost noirish feel to the table. He’s the mad scientist who wreacks havoc and leaves tons of dead bodies in his wake. Delightful! Extremely 80s: wooden acting, synth score, and an 80s palette (IYKYK).
- Frank Lofaro8 March 2026A classic. His love the 80s stiff acting style and weird practical effects. But honestly it was a story ahead of it's time. But to mention you can't pass a movie with Gene Simmons in it. He plays a great psycho.
- Richard5 October 2025First saw it on a movie channel and it felt like discovering a techno-thriller tucked between glossy promos and synth heavy bumpers. There was something special about catching Runaway on a dedicated movie channel. No commercials and most important no interruptions. Tom Selleck plays Jack Ramsay, a cop with a fear of heights and a knack for defusing robotic disasters. Cynthia Rhodes is his sharp partner and Kirstie Alley adds intrigue and tension. But it’s Gene Simmons who steals the show, his icy stare and villainous gadgets make him the perfect hightech menace. Later, owning it on DVD is a treat. But that first viewing on a movie channel? That’s the one that sticks.
- SoCalPete_25 July 2025Runaway (1984), directed by Michael Crichton, is a thrilling sci-fi action flick that showcases Tom Selleck’s magnetic performance as Jack Ramsay, a determined cop hunting rogue robots in a futuristic world.. Futuristic as far as 1984 goes from their perception, of course. Selleck nails the role with his rugged charm and steely resolve, perfectly embodying a man wrestling with high-tech crime. Kirstie Alley, looking stunning, delivers a captivating turn as Jackie, a woman caught in the chaos, her chemistry with Selleck adding emotional depth. Cynthia Rhodes shines as Ramsay’s sharp and loyal partner, Karen, holding her own in the action-packed scenes. Gene Simmons, as the villainous Luther, is the film’s dark heart, oozing menacing charisma and stealing scenes with his chilling presence. The innovative smart bullets and creepy spider robots amplify the tension, making Runaway a visually inventive and engaging ride that still holds up for fans of retro sci-fi.
