I was VERY on board early, as the aesthetics of the flashback to classic black and white Dracula was awesome. Unfortunately the movie couldn't keep me as invested for the full run time. Nick Hoult is awesome as an MCR music video character, and Ben Schwartz is awesome doing his thing but I wish Nic Cage would have gone even bigger. He goes too big for it to feel like a nuanced performance, but not big enough for it to feel like the style is the substance. There's some fun gore and action set pieces for sure. Renfield's cute little wave as he rides a corpse down 2 stories will forever be in my mind. All in all, it's a bit of fun and not much more.

My quick rating - 6.5/10. Having grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula's lackey, Renfield finds a new lease on life - and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy. I am so glad they didn't soften this one up to get a PG rating. Chris McKay, behind the camera, made sure to use the blood in abundance to make sure all the kills were definite. Nicolas Cage playing Dracula was perfectly cast and quite amusing, although I did wish he got a bit more screen time. This one just has fun written all over it. Nicholas Hoult plays Renfield, who is more like Dracula's right-hand man, but instead of just being his lackey, he realizes he wants more than just that and to break away from Dracula's control. This dawns on him when he stumbles across saving a detective played by Awkwafina in a well-choreographed shootout between a local crime gang and police. As with all the action scenes in this one, each looks very good in a comic book way while being violent as can be, spewing blood in all directions. Since Dracula wants to stay a bad guy, this newfound hero behavior doesn't fit into his plan, so we have the good versus evil plot set up for you to sit back and just enjoy. The comedy is mostly deadpan humor, being either a violent joke or just a one-liner tossed in to keep the mood light-hearted. It is too bad they weren't a bit more strategic in their opening, since coming a week before Evil Dead Rise most likely hurt the box office potential, but I am sure it'll do well on VOD since it is a very entertaining flick that is worth checking out.

Laugh out loud funny, spectacularly gory and even some character development. Thoroughly enjoyed. Cage and Awkwafina killed it.

I wanted to soak up every second Nic Cage was on screen. Hyper violent blood and gore with excellently choreographed action scenes, delightfully funny sense of humor—this was exactly what I was hoping this would be. Hoult plays the titular Renfield, Dracula’s “familiar” responsible for tending to all his needs, but has a want to live a life of his own. (You’re treated to an incredible little montage that explains their back story). This theme of self-actualization vs co-dependency runs throughout and gives the film some thematic richness.
Awkwafina and Ben Schwartz round out the excellent main cast, all of whom have great comedic chops. But my god, Nic Cage is just magnificently chewing the scenery of every frame he occupies (which thankfully is quite a lot). Insanely fun time at the theater that satisfied my bloodlust, had my son and I in hysterics, and has a heartfelt underlying message as well.
Go see this opening weekend with a hopefully packed house.

It’s a ridiculous movie. Weird. Funny. Insane. But damnit, it was the film Nicolas Cage was born to play. He can retire now.. he’s peaked with perfection.

A great funny film with excellent performances all round including my new favourite Dracula. Worth watching again and again as you notice little things every time. Hilariously funny and a very gory. A great combination which makes for a great film.

“Renfield” overall is kind of a ho-hum vampire comedy, however it’s Nicolas Cage’s turn as Dracula that takes the film to higher heights. Very gory with some decent action scenes.
