In de nabije toekomst heerst in de Republiek Gilead (voormalig Verenigde Staten) een theocratisch schrikbewind dat is gebaseerd op een fundamentalistische uitleg van het Oude Testament. Ook schaffen ze alle rechten van de vrouwen af. Tegelijk worden er bijna geen kinderen meer geboren: bijna alle vrouwen zijn onvruchtbaar geworden. In dit Gilead horen de vrouwen toe aan de staat en gebruiken ze hen alleen nog maar als broedmachines. Offred is een van de weinige vruchtbare vrouwen. Ze is een bediende bij de Commander en leeft in een wereld waar één verkeerd woord haar dood kan betekenen en moet zich staande zien te houden tegenover de commandanten, hun vrouwen en andere bedienden, met het doel om te overleven en om haar dochter terug te vinden.

This series started off so great and it was the only reason I joined Hulu. Those first couple of seasons during the pandemic were just absolutely brilliant, and I binge them with my wife. The very last season was such a letdown, especially the last couple of episodes. Watch it just for the first couple seasons and then write your own story. You’re better off that way.
