Steve Rogers, a rejected military soldier, transforms into Captain America after taking a dose of a "Super-Soldier serum". But being Captain America comes at a price as he attempts to take down a warmonger and a terrorist organization.
I just watched Captain America: The First Avenger again and I would give it 4.5 out of 5 stars. This is one of the best origin stories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and does an amazing job introducing Steve Rogers and his journey to becoming Captain America. It has action heart and a classic superhero feel that makes it stand out from other Marvel movies. The story follows Steve Rogers a skinny kid from Brooklyn who dreams of joining the army during World War II. No one takes him seriously until he is chosen for a special experiment that turns him into a super soldier. From there he goes from being a symbol of propaganda to a true hero on the battlefield. The way the movie handles his transformation and growth is what makes it such a great origin story. Chris Evans is perfect as Captain America. He completely sells the role bringing the right mix of determination kindness and strength. Even before he gets his powers you believe in Steve as a hero which makes his transformation even more satisfying. He plays the character with so much sincerity that you cannot help but root for him. Hugo Weaving as Red Skull is one of the best Marvel villains. He is menacing intelligent and fully embraces the over the top evil energy that makes classic comic book villains fun to watch. His design and performance make him feel like a real threat and he is a perfect match for Captain America’s first big battle. The supporting cast is just as strong. Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter is one of the best parts of the movie. She is smart tough and actually feels like a fully developed character rather than just a love interest. Tommy Lee Jones as Colonel Phillips adds a great mix of humor and authority while Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes does a solid job as Steve’s best friend. Their dynamic makes the story even more engaging. The action in The First Avenger is fast paced and well choreographed. The way Captain America fights feels different from other Marvel heroes with more hand to hand combat and strategic moves. The shield is used in really creative ways making every fight feel unique. There are a lot of great action sequences but they never overshadow the story which keeps everything balanced. One of the best things about this movie is the World War II setting. It gives the film a completely different feel from most superhero movies making it almost like a war film mixed with comic book action. The production design costumes and old school technology give it a unique atmosphere that makes it stand out in the Marvel universe. The pacing is mostly solid but the second half moves a little too fast. The first half does a great job building up Steve’s character and showing his journey but once he becomes Captain America the movie speeds through a lot of his missions. A little more time developing those moments would have made it even better. The reason I am giving it 4.5 instead of a full 5 is that while it is a great origin story it does not have quite as much rewatch value as some of the later Marvel movies. The action is fun and the characters are great but it does not hit as hard as movies like The Winter Soldier. Overall Captain America: The First Avenger is a fantastic superhero movie with a strong lead great action and a unique setting. It does everything an origin story should do and sets up one of the most important characters in the Marvel universe. I had a great time watching it and it is definitely one of the best origin stories in the MCU.
