If you want to see the difference between a cookie-cutter Hollywood attempt at a blockbuster and a passion project by the word’s most artistic geek watch Pacific Rim and its sequel. Del Toro makes the first film a technological masterpiece - a true vision polished and made perfect by someone who wants his fantasy worlds to resonate.
The giant mechs in this film feel massive. They move with weight and power, which helps the intimidation factor from the kaiju they battle. The tiny details add to the realism that a movie like this demands, less it become a light-weight cartoonish fantasy romp.
