Ghidorah: The Three-Headed Monster

Bought the Criterion Showa Era bundle and I’m super excited to finally watch all these older ones.
The giant monster fight scenes are all suuuper dated but they have their charm. It was cool seeing Ghidorah, Rodan and a larval form of Mothra all on screen with Godzilla. I thought all of the human characters were well written and it was a nice surprise seeing Akiko Wakabayashi in this after just seeing her in You Only Live Twice. Can’t help but feel I should have maybe watched the Showa films in order as were dropped into some deep Mothra lore here…..but from my limited research there was a standalone Mothra film in 1961 so earlier Godzilla films might not have been able to help me either.
All that aside I found the Princess Salno “Venus” lore very interesting…..the movie posits Ghidorah as a world destroyer, one that turned Venus into the greenhouse hellscape we know it as today but was once a thriving planet. Having Ghidorah defeated but not destroyed was a great way to bring the audience back for the next installment.
Criterion transfer looked great and I can’t wait to view the rest!
