Five out of Five - 5/5 Moving at a breezy pace throughout it's 2-hour-and-20-minute-long running time, this swashbuckling action diversion kept me riveted and in awe from start to finish with Gore Verbinski's astonishing direction, alongside the seamless craftsmanship via striking cinematographic tricks, and a taut plot, starting with a pleasing plotline for Keira Knightley as Elizabeth Swann and Orlando Bloom as Will Turner in a gripping opening scene. Not to mention that I can see that it's even worth revisiting on repeat viewings. Based on my experience, "The Curse of the Black Pearl" defines itself as the kind of movie that delivers what anybody desires: a fun swashbuckling adventure romp that is thrilling, horrifying, harrowing, and hilarious with rip-roaring action, an engrossing story to tell, and excellent theatrical performances by a perfect cast. Not only that "The Curse of the Black Pearl" is utterly exciting, yet deep down, it is also intelligent; it unfolds intriguing exposition, especially about the unholy curse. Not to mention that it contains a deeper meaning about stereotyping, because not all pirates are bad. The screenplay is off the chain with a striking use of the foreground and the background, and even an eye-popping use of the color palette for the more appropriate elements. Lets not forget the quick-cut editing for impactful execution. The writing is superb with clever dialogue that is worth remembering. The movie has a tongue-in-cheek tone that delivers unintentionally humor that is both witty and sharp. The production design is lavish with tangible special effects, incredible costumes and makeup. The score by Hans Zimmer and Klaus Badelt is a full-bodied and memorable orchestral score that intensifies the entire film with aggressive strings, bold brass, thunderous drums, a men's chorus, claves, and an ominous pan flute. With a pitch-perfect cast on board (no pun intended), they are defined caricatures with eye-catching appearances and their theatrical performances which are genuinely fun to watch. With fleshed-out backgrounds and flashy personalities, the characterizations are so strong and charismatic. The pirates themselves are complex individuals; flawed yet redeemable. Johnny Depp shines as the eccentric Captain Jack Sparrow with his quirky, wise, swaggering performance. Jack is a heroic pirate with a high level of street smarts. Keira Knightly was absolutely charming as Elizabeth Swann; she is a gorgeous yet no-nonsense daughter of the chief of the navy who is heroic in nature. Orlando Bloom was dramatic as Will Turner; a blacksmith with a medallion that was given by his father who was a pirate and is now deceased. The chemistry between Will and Elizabeth is superbly-written and endearing. Kevin McNally is great as Joshamee. Geoffrey Rush was wicked as the sinister Captain Barbossa with his creepy green glowing eyes and vicious attitude, yet he also has some background. His sidekick is a monkey. Lee Arenberg is wicked as Pintel, while Mackenzie Crook is hilarious as the deranged Ragetti. Highly Recommended (suitable for teens 13 and up).
