I have to say, after watching “Kill Shot” (2023), I’m honestly baffled by how it got such a high rating. I sat there hoping for something gripping, something that would hold me, but what I got was a mishmash of missed opportunities and flat execution. Sure, the cinematography was decent, and I’ll even give them credit for the musical score; it actually had some moments that worked. But beyond that? The direction was downright painful, and the writing felt like it was slapped together without any real care or thought. The plot? Weak and predictable, lacking any real depth or tension. Rib Hillis was far and away the most bearable actor on screen, but Rachel Cook? She’s just not an actress. Watching her deliver her lines was like listening to someone reading a grocery list, no emotion, no soul, just a flat, lifeless monotone. It’s frustrating because you can’t fake heart on screen, and good looks only carry you so far before the cracks start showing. And seriously, the dead parachuter being caught in this weird, obviously thrown-together wooden frame out in the middle of nowhere? It was so out-of-place it pulled me right out of the story. Like a two-inch mole on Cate Blanchett’s nose would, completely unnatural and distracting. Then there’s Jackson, supposedly a Navy SEAL, yet he doesn’t seem to know the most basic tactical moves. Looking through the scope of your rifle while trudging through the woods, wide open and tunnel-visioned? That’s a rookie mistake. The very basics of military training were totally ignored, and it killed any sense of authenticity. You gotta watch your periphery, bro! That first campfire scene between Jackson and Kate killed me too. There’s this weird thudding noise, loud enough that you can’t ignore it, like a crew member dropped something or tossed another log onto the fire. But the characters are supposed to be alone, so who else was there? It’s baffling how that wasn’t fixed or reshot, just sloppy filmmaking. And the guy with the British accent? It was so fake and cringe-worthy, like he was from some tiny Midwestern town like Knob Noster trying way too hard. It completely shattered my suspension of disbelief. I’d bet not a single person in the cast has had any real acting training. Acting seminars taught by a community college adjunct who’s barely directed a couple of plays don’t count. It feels like they rounded up a bunch of weekend hobbyists; auto detailers, forklift operators, whatever their day jobs are, and threw them in front of the camera. The whole production reeks of amateurs who think they can skate by on sheer enthusiasm. Look, I know there are worse movies out there, but “Kill Shot” doesn’t deserve to be praised like it’s some hidden gem. It simply can’t compare to a well-written, tightly directed film. I just wish people would stop rating it as such and be honest about what it really is... a forgettable, poorly executed attempt at what could have been something more.
