The Conjuring

Paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse. Forced to confront a powerful entity, the Warrens find themselves caught in the most terrifying case of their lives.
The Conjuring is a solid entry into the case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren. The opening build up had some good scares, but I felt it lost some of the tension once it was clear there really was something in the house. From then on it played more like a supernatural thriller than straight horror, which made it less spooky for me.
Even so, it’s an enjoyable watch. A few moments even felt unintentionally funny, probably because of how the film has aged, but that didn’t take away too much. It’s not the scariest horror I’ve seen, but it works well as an introduction to the Warrens and the wider universe of stories that followed.
Scary at first, spooky in parts, but more of a ghost story than a nightmare.
