Alita: Battle Angel

Alita: Battle Angel
Manga adaptations going live-action are usually Japan’s domain, so when Hollywood announced Alita: Battle Angel, I’ll admit there was a definite cringe instinct. Surprisingly, I think this one turned out to be a genuinely great film. It captures the spirit of the source material with a detailed, lived-in cyberpunk world, impressive effects, and energetic, crunchy action scenes that made it easy to watch—three times, in my case. Alita’s oversized eyes were undeniably creepy the first time around, but by the third viewing they’d completely grown on me, adding to her otherworldly charm rather than distracting from it. The supporting cast helps sell Iron City as a real place, and Alita’s journey from amnesiac innocent to determined warrior is genuinely engaging. It all left me hungry for more of her story. Maybe we’ll finally get that sequel in 2029? Here’s hoping.
