Gloria is an out-of-work party girl forced to leave her life in New York City and move back home. When reports surface that a giant creature is destroying Seoul, she gradually comes to the realization that she is somehow connected to this phenomenon.
“i used to think it was something else, that you wanted me to be yours, that you wanted to possess me, but no, it’s so much simpler than that… you can’t stand that your life feels so small. it’s that simple… and sad.” this took a far more interesting narrative approach than i thought it would going in, even with knowing the premise. it’s darker and more complex than a simple alcoholism allegory, and towards the end of the film there’s a sequence in a park playground that genuinely felt dire. the cinematography is pretty bog standard, but there are some fun moments with the camera. anne hathaway is giving a great performance as always, and i’ve never seen jason sudeikis in this kind of role, which was so refreshing to watch. a pleasant surprise.
