Dario Argento: I'm going to make the most insane version of Dracula ever.
Luc Besson: Hold my Cognac
This is the Anti-Eggers Nosferatu
Despite the trailer making me think this was going to be a remake of Francis Ford Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula, Luc Besson made the story his own for better or worse. It's goofy like the Fifth Element, and surrealist like The Messenger. Some things work well, like Christophe Waltz as Van Helsing, it is visually impressive, the story moves, And there are really interesting sequences. Danny Elfman's score is memorable. However, some things dont work as well as they should. The goofy gargoyle minions left me longing for Subspecies, lots of wtaf moments that are better off unspoiled. I don't know why I thought this would be sane, but it is absolutely bonkers. It isn't a faithful adaptation so I imagine the Dracula scholars are going to have some real problems with this when this comes out in the US next spring.
