The Mermaid

The Mermaid
When Xuan's real estate project threatens the home of mermaids, Shan is sent to stop him. When they fall in love, he is encouraged to cancel the project. However, he must save them from bigger danger.
Stephen Chow strikes again with "The Mermaid," and it's exactly the kind of bonkers environmental fairytale you'd expect. The story is simple: a greedy real estate developer wants to destroy a dolphin reserve, and a mermaid is sent to assassinate him. What follows is a hurricane of slapstick, some genuinely funny moments (the police station scene is f*ing hysterical), and some that are just plain cringe. The main actress tries way too hard, but Deng Chao and Show Lo as an octopus-man are brilliant. The movie’s eco-friendly message gets a bit lost in all the silliness, but who cares? It's a fun, stupid, and ridiculously over-the-top ride. It's not Chow's best work, but it's a hell of a lot more entertaining than most of the sh out there.
