Den smått galne men genialiske dr Pretorius och hans kollega dr Tillinghast uppfinner en maskin som öppnar sinnet till en annan dimension, full av hemska odjur och bestar. När Pretorius dödas av ett monster under ett experiment blir Tillinghast misstänkt och anklagad för att vara sinnessjuk. Men psykologen McMichaels räddar honom från den madrasserade cellen eftersom hon tror på hans osannolika berättelse. Nu vill hon utföra experimentet igen för att bevisa att Tillinghast inte är galen.

I read a lot of H.P. Lovercraft horror stories and novels as a kid. This is the first movie I saw that was based on his writing (there have been several others since). It looks dated now without CGI, because it used practical special effects (rubber masks, fake limbs, lots of slime, etc.) but it still holds up OK because the story is good. I loved this movie when it first came out, and I still enjoy it for the nostalgia. One of horror director Stuart Gordon's best movies. Also see his movies 'Re-Animator' and 'Castle Freak'.
