Baserad på en sann historia. Frankrike är ockuperat av nazisterna under andra världskriget. Marie lever ensam med sina två barn, hennes man är krigsfånge. En dag hjälper hon en kvinna att göra en abort, som tack får hon en grammofon. Marie finner att hon har en talang hon kan tjäna pengar på. Detta är en film om kvinnors överlevnad under ockupation, och det är en film om graviditet och aborter. Det är en film om när en man och hans barn är beroende av kvinnan i familjen.

compelling story, and well-paced...but the characters were impossible to fully comprehend for me. lurching, paradoxical, but not in a realistic way...more of a sloppy or confusing way. I was fully expecting a complex and multifaceted group of flawed people to emerge, but, as these contradictions presented themselves scene to scene, they felt like 2d sketches of different people instead of a deepening and fleshing out of a single individual. Maybe Isabelle Huppert is too good at her cold, sphinx-like acting technique, actually. I was never convinced of her humanity or inner motivations.
