L'Eclisse

In the suburbs of Rome, translator Vittoria breaks her engagement with her boyfriend, writer Riccardo, after a troubled night. Vittoria goes downtown to meet her mother, who is addicted to the stock market, and she meets materialist broker Piero on a day the stock-market crashes. Piero and Vittoria begin a monosyllabic relationship.
The story within the pictures isn't as much the story as the pictures telling it. Michelangelo Antonioni uses his camera to create a visual masterpiece in exquisite black-and-white, with his celluloid canvas highlighted by beautiful lead actors in all of their photogenic glory. A chatty picture this is not. It's the lens that does most of the talking.
