Any movie that is aiming to inspire young people to love cinema and its history gets an A+ in my book. Watching the joy this brought my kid who has audacious dreams to make his own movies was truly something special.
So Denzel is 71 years old. Spike is 69. How old would you guess Ilfenesh Hadera is? She’s 40. And I think this little bit of trivia is a good analogy for the movie of two older men trying cosplay as their former younger selves, and the result is actually kind of endearing. I wanted to not like this, but Spike sucked me in with a very unexpected soundtrack and some great character twists and conversations. I also love that no matter how mainstream Lee gets, he still is making these unique indie short films within a muddled Hollywood-ism he has to exist in. This movie is definitely worth the time and it’s fun to see two old guys try their best to be young again.

Good Luck, Have Fun, Don't Die
I’m doing 2.5 stars because I feel so deeply ambivalent about this movie. I wanted to love it, but man. It was ham-fisted, didactic, and embodied a lot of the very problems it was critiquing. It felt like Gore was cosplaying as Terry Gilliam, and could never quite pull it off. It was such a nice looking movie in the first half and then Gore just overloads with very very very bad CGI. Maybe that was his point? I’m not sure. I hope more and more artists continue critiquing A.I. and its proselytes, and in that regard I’m grateful for this movie. The White Lotus alums carry the emotional core and help overcome a pretty bad script. So yeah…I loved this movie and I hated this movie. Just depended on the scene.

Toy Story 5
This was just a great story and felt like the franchise got away from their fetish with existential dread and imbued the characters with hope and purpose. The Buzz storyline was great too. Though I’m now curious with the role of electricity in the life force of the toys.

Jay Kelly
I really wanted to love this movie, but something about George Clooney just didn’t vibe with me. I could never get behind the idea that Clooney as a cypher for the movie star was or is actually this emotionally shallow and brittle. There was too much meta referentials to not be tempted to make these connections, and I think a more publicly insecure movie star would’ve been better for the role. Honestly…Adam Sandler might’ve been the better call for Jay Kelly and George could’ve been his dad?

Widow's Bay
This is some incredible television and a great progression from Murai and Dippold on the horror ethos of Flanagan, Cregger, and others. Episode 4 was the highlight for me, and I loved how each episode explored an iconic horror trope. My only letdown was the season finale was weirdly plotted and it felt like the show runners got a season renewal while finalizing the script and just chopped off the last 20 minutes of resolution. But that’s not a horrible problem since it means we’re getting season 2! I highly recommend this show.
Super fun thriller. I’m not sure if it was intentional, but it posits a lot of interesting questions about consent and the fragility of our deepest desires. Surprisingly thought provoking for a teen horror.
Really engaging Biblical adaptation. I was surprised they covered his adult years and that stuff was surprisingly affecting. I did find the songs a little cheesy, but that’s a larger issue with me being cynical and CCM being doo-doo. All in all, a great family movie!

Sing 2
I was stunned by how good this movie was. My five year old loves it and we went to a free screening at our local cineplex and I was shocked by how fun and cohesive it was for a kids musical. Great songs, great themes, great characters. Might be a top ten kids movie for me. But, full disclosure, I’m a sucker for U2.
This show was so consistently funny and surprising. Great chemistry between all the characters and a surprising amount of heart and familial warmth amidst the violence.

The Breadwinner
I’m pleasantly surprised. It was a bit corny at times and had way too many corporate sponsor synergy moments, but I LOLed a ton and the supporting cast was really really funny. Jost and Forte saved the movie imo. I think you should stream it when it’s on the airplane.
This is the kind of movie you don’t just watch, but one you taste and smell as you go on a psychedelic journey through a mysterious desert. The story and the characters are shrouded in the unknown but there is something deeply familiar hovering just above you the whole time. This movie is heavy with dark tones and will leave you in a state of bewilderment after the final act.
