It tells episodes from the life of the land inspector Zacharias Bräsig, who lived on the fictional Warnitz estate in Mecklenburg in the middle of the 19th century. A time that is characterized by gradual progress, such as the railroad, the industrial revolution , emigration to America and, above all, political upheavals of the time that did not stop even at rural Mecklenburg . Bräsig experiences the plight of the people in rural areas who get into financial difficulties and works for them. Above all, however, the still widespread relationship between landlords and their subordinates - a strictly conservative social structure - is presented and the problems that arise from it.
