- Dario11. srpna 2026One of those series I left sitting there for far too long and then demolished in three days once I finally started it. The main reason I would revisit Chief of War is the world it builds. The extensive Hawaiian dialogue, costume work, feathered regalia, weapons, canoes and physical landscapes make it feel materially different from the usual generic historical epic. The production researched Hawaiian clothing and material culture extensively, including work with museum collections and cultural practitioners. Jason Momoa also surprised me. Kaʻiana still gives him plenty of chances to be physically imposing, but the better material is quieter: regret, uncertainty, family strain and the growing realisation that Western weapons may be both necessary for survival and catastrophic in the long term. Kaina Makua is excellent as a restrained Kamehameha, while Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison and Cliff Curtis make the surrounding political world feel inhabited rather than arranged around the star. The finale is the obvious rewatch episode. Momoa directs “The Black Desert” himself, opening the battle with a fantastic exchange of ritual insults before everything collapses into muskets, smoke, clubs, spears and volcanic carnage. The location gives the episode a physical brutality that would have been difficult to fake convincingly on a stage. Historical accuracy needs caveats. Characters and events are compressed, and Keōua's televised death is dramatically different from the historical record. Still, definitely one to keep. I only wish “Season 2” was something more concrete than optimism at this point.

- MacBobby Chibuzor16. září 2025Jason wrote the story himself. While that’s a huge feat; the story has holes and lacks depth. It’s a ripoff of Vikings but a more stressful one to understand. Are chiefs kings or just chiefs? If just chiefs, why does Kamehameha have a council of chiefs? What the faak even is that name?
