Dobrodružný seriál nás zavede do éry zlatého věku pirátství, dvacet let před událostmi ze slavného románu Ostrov pokladů. V období zlatého věku pirátství přibírá obávaný kapitán Flint do své posádky mladého nováčka Johna Silvera, kterého bude jednoho dne znát celý svět. Flint bojuje o přežití ostrova New Providence, na kterém stojí pirátská základna. V roce 1715 ale světové mocnosti zvyšují intenzitu boje proti námořním lupičům, protože ti v oblasti Západní Indie dlouhodobě ohrožují námořní obchod. Zákony každé civilizované země piráty prohlašují za „hostis humani generis“, nepřátele celého lidstva. V odpověď ustanovují piráti svoji vlastní doktrínu: vyhlašují válku celému světu!
