Suzuki began to take an interest in manga in college after being impressed by works such as those of Yoshiharu Tsuge . In 1975, a decisive turning point came when he was contacted by Weekly Shonen Champion . His series Byokudaisho became a success, as did Ah !! Hana no Oendan (嗚呼!!花の応援団), which was adapted into a film in 1976.
