- ## Synopsis A plain office workers learns that he is something special. Someone who was bored to be a superhuman assassin being offered a position in "The Fraternity" after the death of his father. ## Review This is so hoke watching it now as compared to how cool it was in 2008. That doesn't mean that there isn't this important lesson in the movie about becoming more, but maybe that was what this movie said to me when it came out. Maybe it still resonates with me that way. The action is just fun. The wild bullet bending, curving, and outrageous shots that are miles away. You have a pre [[X-Men Origins Wolverine]] and [[Deadpool]] bullet slicing and defending with knives. You have crazy car chases where cars are flipped into buses and trains. Cars are flipped over one another so they can take out a target. Just wild things. That is the point of the movie thought to just be fun I think. I forgot that this was James McAvoy. It is his voice in this movie that I use for sarcasm mostly. It was very annoying. However, I think we see the great actor he would become and most of the issue is with direction or writing. It is hard to see some of this. I think Angelina's character is my favorite. Not because of the way they made her look badass, but because of her devotion to the belief of what she was doing. When she found out that things were not as she was told, she followed the letter to ensure things didn't happen to someone else like it happened to her. ## [My Rating] When I watched this in 2008, I was just about to leave for the Marines and the idea that some doormat could become something more. That is the underlying message here. Strip out the blood, the violence, the awful comedy, and you are left with someone wanting to believe they are meant for something more. That is why this movie sits in my head. However, watching it now, the lines that are meant to inspire or challenge you are grossly overplayed and force-fed. Objectively, this is a cool movie, but as [[MythBusters]] proved, its crap. For nostalgia and entertainment purposes, I'd give it an 8. Really though, the dialogue is beyond rouge. The action and plot armor is too much. This is a 6, but a fun 6. ## [Parental Rating] There is nudity, an insane amount of language for an action movie, and violence that goes beyond gory such as in [[X]] and just moves to stupid and comedic. However, those reasons are reasons that will make it easy to know where my parents stand on this. I know for certain my Dad hated this movie back in the day. Rejected by both.
- Many action movies, comic books and geek-appeal TV shows are fantasies of empowerment. Protagonists from Luke Skywalker through Peter Parker and Harry Potter are mistaken for dullards by everyone in their lives. They are whisked out of their ruts by magical mentors, who induct them into secret universes where they inherit a legacy of heroism (along with an arch-enemy or two), can take their pick of the cool toys (mostly fast vehicles and big weapons) and get to marry (or at least cop-off with) the princess or prince of their choice. Wanted fits that template treading a tricky path between `with great power comes great responsibility' and `absolute power corrupts absolutely'. Here, a whiny loser gets access to sports cars, guns that shoot round corners and a tattooed Angelina Jolie, and takes his place in a battle between good and evil without necessarily caring about the body count. Our hero, Wesley (James McAvoy), endures arduous training which brings out his latent near-superhuman abilities, and executes his first missions. The director, Timur Bekmambetov, obviously has a lot of fun with a sizable budget, we get fights, chases, crashes, murders and assaults involving flipped-over sports cars, speeding trains, skyscrapers, and a castle. Bekmambetov understands pacing and escalation, scenes build in intensity, and each sequence is filled with inventive gags or gimmicks, like the broken letters that spell out a to the point resignation message when Wesley breaks his keyboard on the face of the best friend who is sleeping with his girlfriend. A great thing about Wanted is it doesn't seem interested in trying to appeal to the masses by getting a 12A certificate, so it can deliver the gruesome payoffs to its fights. McAvoy, boyish charming and occasionally scary, carries off a tricky role, growing the hero's character to match his bullet-curving and knife-fighting skills, and proves he can hold his own on the big screen. A slender Angelina Jolie is insidiously attractive as the world's greatest (and, apparently, most limber) hit lady: I have never seen her more charismatic on screen - or bent into such odd positions. In a time where even the good action films have been predictable, Wanted offers more than enough twists, turns and surprises to fool viewers who think they know what's going to happen. Wanted is fun, funny and packed with more action than you can shake an AK-47 at. Recommended.
- Some movies demand suspension of disbelief. *Wanted* grabs disbelief, throws it through a windshield, shoots it with a curved bullet, and keeps going. And it's ridiculously fun. The whole thing feels like watching a comic book come to life: over-the-top action, outrageous violence, dark humor, impossible physics, and characters with enough attitude to power a small city. It actually reminds me a little of the *Deadpool* movies. Not because the stories are particularly similar, but because both have that same sense of swagger. These are movies with attitudes. The story itself is pretty straightforward and predictable. Ordinary loser discovers he's actually extraordinary, gets trained, becomes a badass, learns everything isn't quite what it seems, and eventually gets his revenge. We've been here before. Doesn't matter. James McAvoy is excellent. It's interesting seeing him this young because the talent is already obvious. He manages to make Wesley pathetic enough at the beginning that his transformation later becomes enormously satisfying. And that transformation is where the movie really takes off. Once Wesley goes full John Wick, the action becomes almost a live-action version of *Max Payne*: slow motion, impossible gunplay, bodies flying, bullets doing things Isaac Newton would strongly object to. Angelina Jolie is perfectly cast. She doesn't need much dialogue. A look, a smirk, a gun... done. Morgan Freeman and the rest of the supporting cast give the ridiculous premise just enough credibility to keep the whole thing from floating away. And any movie that lets Chris Pratt get hit in the face **twice** earns at least a couple of bonus points. 😂 But perhaps the most satisfying thing about *Wanted* is something much simpler: revenge. There's a certain primitive cinematic pleasure in spending the beginning of a movie watching people treat the protagonist like garbage and then getting to watch those same people discover that the punching bag has learned how to punch back. Is any of this remotely plausible? Absolutely not. But criticizing *Wanted* for being unrealistic would be like criticizing a roller coaster for having too many turns. The excess is the attraction. It's violent, funny, stylish, completely absurd, and enormously entertaining. Sometimes you don't need profound cinema. Sometimes you just want to watch an antihero with an attitude kick everyone's ass.
- It's a lot. So my first impressions are that Wanted is an action packed, high octane...and it is. There are some cool looking stunts that are too perfect to be real, and a classic training montage in the middle. It is fun to see young, almost a baby, Chris Pratt as "best friend" Barry missing a tooth and saying his catch phrase to the film, "he's the man." Angelina Jolie is in prime shape in this era of her films and I liked how her tattoos lined up with the art work on her gun the first time you see her. I think that you, like the main character that is played by James McAvoy, you get drawn into the action and don't see the story until he does. That leads me to the biggest point for me in any tale being told, story. When I talk with people about a movie I've seen, I talk about the story. This films story is as shallow as it deepest character, played by Angelina Jolie, and her character doesn't get that deep. Jolie, in the end plays the quintessential good guy to McAvoy 's anti-hero main character. It's no big reveal when the other hero of the film reveals who he is. The veteran actors of this film carry the best performances, and let's face it, to back seat all the best performances should be a crime.
- I can't believe this has good reviews, I hated it. Just a teenager's fantasy with a dumb plot and cheesy CGI effects. Had to turn it off part way. I distinctly remember realising I would truly hate it right around the time Jolie drifts a Dodge Viper sideways into McAvoy and he somehow winds up seated perfectly in the car and unhurt. But that's just one of the more memorable examples of dumb crap in this.
