- ርልዪረ1. února 2025Fantastic movie detailing the amazing life of Louis Zamperini, from troubled youth to Olympic runner and subsequent war time experience. There is a good reason for the film's title of Unbroken, as the trials and tribulations that were visited upon this man, would have crushed a lesser person. I thought Jack O'Connell gave an excellent performance, wholly believable, capturing the indomitable will of Louis Zamperini. The film starts in earnest with the crash landing in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean and survival of the 3 men in their life raft. Having a positive attitude and willingness to adapt and improvise is shown when the men capture a sea bird, try to eat it unsuccesfully and then use its flesh as bait for fish. Adpating the Japanese custom of Sushi they survive on consuming raw fish and a shark they pull aboard and butcher. Maintaining their sanity they talk frequently. What follows next with Japanese internment is not for the faint hearted. The sadistic and dehumanising treatment is spared no detail. The protagonist is singled out by the inhumane commandant and through his inner strength he manages to survive the beatings and torture. The Japanese mistreated the Korean and Chinese people even more, and they have a legacy of war crimes in the region that resonate even to this day, for example with the so called 'comfort women' from South Korean who were forced into army brothels, and the live testing of biological weapons on Chinese villagers, among other atrocities.
- Razorbitz28. listopadu 2025One of many WWII biopics that does exactly what it sets out to do. This one has the interesting esteem of being one of Angelina Jolie's few directed films with a serviceable script by the Coen brothers no less. One thing I appreciate about Jolie as a director is that she tends to lack the pretension I always go in expecting. I only wish she didn't lean so heavily into wholly unnecessary CG. All in, it's pretty good, and tells a true story with an embossed hollywood finish--maybe a bit overzealous at times but its heart is in the right place, I think. For my part, I enjoyed the little things the most in this one, especially in the beginning chase sequence following the protagonist as a young boy with the care put in to capture the Olympic journey--by far the best part of the film for me. Despite the film's length it never outstays its welcome, and explores some of the lesser known experiences of the POW life as the film deftly jumps from one tragedy after the next Zamperini finds himself trapped in. While emotionally the experience can feel flat at times, I appreciate the immense amount of effort made to make every scene as period accurate as possible. I particularly enjoyed the POW radio show and the bizarre experience that must have been for Zamparini in how his suffering became commercialized. The torture he endures and the hot blooded american spirit that pushes him through often feels like the beginnings of a tall tale, but despite my own misgivings I found myself caught up in the final moments. Unbroken is often overproduced and unrealistically glossy for the subject matter, but there is earnest intent in the story being told here. Its a fine film. Watch it, maybe!

Dotáhl to až do amerického olympijského týmu na hry v Berlíně v roce 1936, kde mimo jiných ohromil i Hitlera. O pár let později ohromoval jeho spojence jako člen posádky amerického bombardéru operujícího v jižním Pacifiku. Když během jedné záchranné operace jeho stroj spadl do oceánu, byl Louis jedním ze tří členů posádky, kteří havárii přežili. Víc než měsíc strávil v záchranném člunu, než ho zachránila kolem plující loď. Bohužel, ta loď byla japonská. Zamperini se ocitl v zajateckém táboře, který připomínal peklo na zemi. Už tak těžké podmínky k životu se Louisovi ještě zhoršily, když se jeho věznitelé dozvěděli, že je to slavný sportovec. Chtěli ho zničit, chtěli ho zlomit. Jenže on byl prostě nezlomný.
