Tumbbad is a wonderfully gritty and unconventional horror film that shines brightest in its world-building. The effort put into creating a oppressive, rain-drenched atmosphere and eerie visuals is obvious from the start. At its core, the movie is a dark moral fable about how unbridled greed (lalach) ultimately consumes a person the more you grasp, the more you lose. My only warning is not to go in expecting a life changing masterpiece just because of the internet hype, or you might end up a bit disappointed. Overall, it’s still a really solid, decent watch if you like weird folk-horror."

Across several generations, Vinayak discovers how to exploit an ancient deity, Hastar, and turn supernatural knowledge into wealth. The opening sets the tone: a ruined, rain-soaked house hides a terrifying secret, and Vinayak's mother guards a chained, mummified creature hinting at deeper mythology. The central idea is simple and effective: wealth lies underground, but claiming it means dealing with something that should have stayed buried. Vinayak learns the rules and makes a business of it, so the horror is inseparable from his greed. Visually it's extraordinary. Rain, mud, old buildings and subterranean spaces feel physically ancient, and the treasure chamber resembles a grotesque womb. The mythology feels invented for the story, but complete. The folk-horror credentials are strong because the threat is tied to landscape, family history and inherited knowledge. It's a rich warning against reducing ancient powers to useful instructions.
- Niztradamus29. srpna 2025Extremely weird movie. Idk what to say... It's about greed and how it destroys a person but there wasn't really any character development. Our protagonist is a greedy P 0 S that mistreats his mum, his wife and his child. He is an awful friend and brother. There are no redeeming qualities to him whatsoever. And yet, the movie has a certain charm. It draws you in by it's strangeness and before you know it this acid trip of a movie is over. It's worth watching, if just for the batshit insanity this movie was.
