An intimate character piece that’s played pitch perfect by cast. Every actor really lives in their role and brings its story to life. Most of the film of I forgot I was watching an Anthony Bourdain biopic and I mean that as a compliment. While the camera work is a departure from the more guerilla filming style I’m used to in Matt Johnson’s work, the blocking of all the characters really worked for me. Really captures that tight kitchen environment and it bleeds into shots throughout the film. One scene at a party in particular, the characters are literally on top of each other it’s so claustrophobic it’s almost uncomfortable to watch. But it’s really in service of the story it’s telling. Another incredible Jay McCarrol score that elevates the entire film. Tony is one of the best biopics in recent memory. Full heartbreaking and heartfelt moments. Loved it!

Nirvanna The Man The Restaurant The Book The Movie So happy to see Zapruder Films and “Music by Jay McCarrol” in the credits Was listening to the Cocaine Cowboys Cumtowm episodss last night and now this… I wanna party too… Matt Johnson is sensational at making you want to make projects with your friends Pretty sure “Tony” blinks 20 times in 30 seconds at one point Such a disturbingly weird time to hook up lol wtf Glad this film didn’t make manipulating a woman you’re in love with into giving you a chance a romantic thing to do like Voicemails to Isabelle Why’d he let the douchebag ostracize himself when Tony is arguably just as bad lmfao Dominic is going to be a great typecast as a sarcastic tool. I mean, he fully looks the part; it’s tough to break such a permanent look of disdain. It’s perfectly fine! Antonio Banderas is on a different level tho Currently Ranked #41/147 in 2026 Ranked

Tony takes a deliberately narrow slice of Anthony Bourdain's life and finds more than enough to work with in the years before the persona most people know had fully taken shape. Matt Johnson never seems interested in smoothing out Bourdain's rough edges or turning his early years into a conventional rise-to-fame story. The Provincetown setting gives the film a sweaty, lived-in texture, and Michael Bauman's cinematography captures both the coastal beauty and the grime of the kitchen. Dominic Sessa is especially strong at playing the contradiction at the center of Bourdain, outwardly cocky and abrasive while still carrying the insecurity of someone who hasn't figured out where he belongs. Emilia Jones gives Nancy an unpolished sincerity that makes her feel like someone Tony could actually fall for, and her presence highlights the parts of him still trying to figure out how to connect with people. Drawing from the early chapters of Kitchen Confidential, the film expands on Bourdain's stories while taking enough liberties to feel original. The film does drift into familiar coming-of-age territory at times, and a few emotional turns are easy to spot ahead of time. I liked the characters enough that those moments rarely pulled me out of it. The kitchen is where Tony really starts to come together. He finds something he can take seriously, and the restaurant becomes more than just the place he's spending the summer. His arrogance starts catching up with him, and he begins to learn that respect is something he has to earn. That's why Johnson's decision not to tell Bourdain's entire life story feels right. By staying with Tony during this particular stretch of time, the film can focus on the experiences that might have shaped the person he would eventually become. I left feeling like I'd spent time with someone who was still a long way from becoming Anthony Bourdain, and that ended up being exactly what made the film resonate with me.

this picture, a film constructed as a typical bildungsroman biopic, manages to find its identity in johnson’s direction and the exceedingly complicated web of lies that tony tells both to the people around him and himself. it’s raucous and stressful to watch, and all of the performances are wonderful; this is probably my favorite of antonio banderas’ performances in recent years. there’s a staggering contrast between dominic sessa’s portrayal of a young, selfish anthony bourdain and the socially conscious maverick persona he would eventually grow into, and this film really made me miss him and the influence he had. p.s. i love that jay mccarrol always does the music for matt johnson’s films.

What if “Tony” wasn’t about Bourdain?

If this wasn't an Anthony Bourdain biopic, but rather a standalone film about a 19-year-old writer, would it still be a good watch?
