Čím byli pro americký film noir autoři tzv. drsné školy Raymond Chandler, James M. Cain a Dashiell Hammett, tím byl pro tradici britského kriminálního filmu Graham Greene. Právě podle jeho románu (v tom prvním případě) a na základě jeho původního scénáře (v případě druhém) byly natočeny nejvýznamnější „britské noiry" Brightonský špalek a Třetí muž. Druhý jmenovaný titul vznikl v rámci Greenovy spolupráce s uznávaným britským režisérem Carolem Reedem. Film má ale mnohem kosmopolitnější ráz – odehrává se v poválečné Vídni, produkčně se na něm podílel Američan David O. Selznick a do ústředních rolí byli obsazeni jeho krajané Joseph Cotten a Orson Welles. Kafkovský příběh zasazený do kulis rozbořené rakouské metropole zdobí Oscarem oceněná kamera Roberta Kraskera a nezapomenutelný hudební doprovod Antona Karase. Noir Film Festival

    When movies were truly art. From the soundtrack, to the dialogue, to the acting and the cinematography.

    It’s a very good film, with an intriguing noir-style plot set in post-war Vienna. The cinematography deserves top marks, though to be honest, we’ve seen it all before – it’s a reflection of a fascination with German Expressionism. Alida Valli was excellent, whereas personally I don’t really feel the greatness of Orson Welles (though, to be fair, he didn’t have much to do here). And finally: the music in this film is a real nightmare.

    This is a fine film, maybe too easy to predict if you’re into Sherlock Holmes. I have trouble here, I realise the cultural impact of this film but even for noir or detective film, I think Hitchcock still surpasses all. Modern audiences will definitely not like this, it’s not something that we have not already seen, and cinephiles will prefer Hitchcock.
