- jackmeat16. ledna 2025My quick rating - 8.6/10. To take a flick from 1951 "The Thing from Another Planet" which in its time and still a classic, and actually improve, drastically on it is a tall feat. But John Carpenter did just that with this 1982 piece of gold. The story is simple, an Arctic expedition team happens across an alien ship and inadvertently releases it. Of course you don't really know what the Thing is since it mimics the host. To say this movie is simple though would be an outright lie. This movie transcended an entire generation of movies to follow it. This took the creature creation to an entirely new level, and still stands up today even in the CGI created worlds. The characters were extremely well written and cast to near perfection. This is paramount in a story where the alien could be the person standing right next to you. It is not often you can go back to a movie 38 years later and it is still phenomenal. Heck, I wish I may be like one of you reading this and have never seen it, just so I could be lucky enough to see it again for the first time. It is that good. There have been thousands of write ups for this movie over the years, so I won't go too deep into this (back when I did write for a newspaper, I had to write a certain amount for my column, now, I think quick and to the point is far more effective). Quick ending. SEE THIS
- Magnus Carlbaum28. ledna 2026John Carpenter's The Thing is one of the best horror movies of all time. Hyperbole? Nope. It is a masterclass piece of cinema history that I place firmly on the same shelf as The Exorcist, Jaws, Rosemary's Baby and Psycho. From the pulsating score, the cinematography, the paranoia inducing script, the memorable and very human characters, and even the best dog actor ever put on screen (fight me) to Rob Bottins pneumonia induced fever dream that is the practical effects. The Thing is the sum of its parts. If this review actually convinces someone to watch it for the first time - please let me know. That would put a great big smile on my face.
- Vincent Reggiannini2. března 2026A masterclass of tension, paranoia and dread. John Carpenter has always had a knack of simplifying fear, presenting it in such a way that it overwhelms the viewer, but he does so in such subtle, artistic ways. In Halloween there was actually very little blood or gore. Spiked by a brilliant soundtrack, which isn basically a single heart-beat that gets copied, mimicked and then over-whelmed - just like the victims in “The Thing”. What’s amazing about this movie is how derided it was when it was first released. Carpenters was lampooned, mocked and labeled a pariah. He lost director’s gigs, he was shunned and he developed a distinct and to this day, an everlasting disdain for Hollywood. But 40 years later this movie is considered one of the best horror\sci-fi movies in history. Beyond the sharp script, and haunting, threatening music are Rob Bottin’s crazy effective practical special effects. Bottin was in his early 20s when he tackled this job and his work still turns heads (and stomachs) decades later. A great ensemble cast plays these doomed characters with a believability and dread. They slowly realize they are in an increasingly desperate situation and before they tear themselves apart they turn to a quiet but intense leader, played brilliantly by Kurt Russel. Russel’s “MacReady” is reluctant but determined, intense but low key. If you’re a sci-fi fan you owe it to yourself to watch this movie,. If you’re a horror film fan, why haven’t you seen this yet? Whether you watch this alone, or with a friend you are in for a relentless white-knuckle dive into a high-tension roller-coaster ride, that culminates in an ending that only makes sense in this movie’s world.
