Better than expected. George Clooney's post-apocalyptic science fiction drama tells a compelling story, takes its time doing so, and delivers an emotional payoff. Clooney stars as Augustine, a terminally ill scientist stranded in the Arctic after an unexplained catastrophe has rendered Earth all but uninhabitable. At the same time, the crew of the Aether spacecraft are making their way home, unaware of what awaits them. The film follows both storylines in parallel, gradually bringing them together. Clooney delivers one of the more interesting performances of his career. Rather than playing the suave, confident leading man audiences have seen so many times before, he is allowed to inhabit a frail, dying, deeply regretful character. The role gives him room to explore a very different side of himself as an actor, and he handles it well. The Aether crew storyline is equally engaging. The cast is strong throughout, and the film does a good job of making both narratives feel important. Too often in films with parallel storylines, one thread feels like an obligation while the other carries the real weight of the story. Here, both remain compelling. The film's biggest weakness lies in its treatment of the catastrophe itself. It goes to considerable lengths to conceal exactly what happened to Earth, turning the mystery into a recurring point of focus. Unfortunately, by drawing so much attention to the question while refusing to answer it, the film occasionally creates frustration rather than intrigue. Some apocalyptic films successfully leave their disasters unexplained by making the cause irrelevant. The Midnight Sky never quite commits to that approach. Still, the story unfolds with confidence and patience. The film allows scenes to breathe, trusts the audience to follow along, and avoids the frantic pacing that often undermines modern science fiction. When the various threads finally converge, the resolution is fantastic. It leans a little too heavily into sentimentality, but it remains effective nonetheless. This was Clooney's seventh film as a director, and it shows a filmmaker who has steadily improved with experience. He is not a visionary director in the mould of cinema's great stylists, but he is a highly competent one. He understands pacing, performance, and tone, and he rarely allows the film to venture somewhere that feels undercooked or unpolished. The Midnight Sky is thoughtful, well-acted, beautifully shot science fiction that succeeds more often than it fails. It may not reinvent the genre, but it tells its story with confidence and skill. Nicely done.

My quick rating - 5.5/10. Very good-looking movie that just lacked any sense of urgency to it. From what is going on, and how the people react, seems totally contradictory to reality. Clooney again proves he has the chops to play both sides of the camera, but the story itself just didn't have much to it.

While this isn't a bad movie per-say, It definitely isn't a good movie either. The whole play through I was expecting something to happen only to be disappointed when the end credits rolled. It was just so utterly boring and directionless, even the "action" scenes were pretty much plagued with that pervasive sense of boredom that makes this movie its home. If you're a dedicated Clooney fan and you manage to not skip through a bunch of this flick, even the big reveal at the end wont be a huge surprise and will quickly fall to the wayside when you realize that you wanted 2 hours of your life. This literally is The American (2010) all over again, just set in space this time.
