Tato akční komedie o superhrdinovi prošla během postprodukce velkými úpravami a na střihu spolupracovali rovnou čtyři profesionálové, aby dostali film do výsledného tvaru. Townsend tuto „městskou pohádku“ napsal, režíroval, produkoval a zahrál si i hlavní roli jakožto Jefferson Reed, mírný suplující učitel v problémové čtvrti, které nekompromisně vládne gang peroxidových blonďáků v černém. Místní obyvatelé se už vzdali nadějí na to, že by se utiskovatelů mohli jednou zbavit. Ale potom zasáhne Jeffersona meteorit a nesmělý učitel najednou zjistí, že umí létat, má nepřekonatelnou sílu a dokáže si zapamatovat veškeré informace z knihy za pouhých třicet sekund...
Režie: Robert Townsend

Meteor Man is a black Superman. But this super man story says more than the story of Superman. There are no aliens in this movie. There are no spaceships. This film is about people, and an ordinary man put under extraordinary circumstances. It's about everyday problems that are ignored in inner cities. It touches on the problem of gangs, violence, and drugs. But these are all battled through self-belief, family, friendship, and community. Though this movie is not necessarily a Steven Spielberg film it does have attractive qualities to it, especially in its sense of humor. It is a very funny movie, and the story though fairly simple is well written, and entertaining. The film Meteor Man answers the question of, "What would Superman be like if he were black?" Well worth a watch for lighthearted fun, and drama from an era that some have forgotten. This is the best black super-hero movie of the 1990s.

Top badass moment? Meteor Man taking time out to do some gardening. I’m not sure where he got his seed from, but I’d love to know. Not only does it take just a few hours for everything to grow to gigantic proportions, but it doesn’t really have anything much to do with the plot, it’s just a little gardening interlude and the film is all the better for it. I did wonder who was going to help fund and manage it in future though. I doubt the local authority will want to take it on as an extra, unbudgeted and ongoing expense, whilst local people may not have the time, knowledge or resources to do so. Such a shame. I worked for many years in community development, in both inner London and Belfast (pre Good Friday Agreement). Not once did an actual superhero turn up at any of the endless evening meetings that always seem to be held in cold, dark halls, although I’m pretty sure one guy who regularly attended some in Belfast was quite high up in one of the Loyalist paramilitary organisations, as he seemed very sure that the community garden we were planning wouldn’t be interfered with by the latter. So with hindsight not exactly a superhero, but probably helpful all the same. Meteor Man had the worst-kept secret identify since Tony Stark in “Iron Man 2”. Is there anyone who didn’t work out who he was? He didn’t even try to cleverly hide himself behind a pair of glasses, like that ‘master of disguise’ Superman. I couldn’t quite work out if this film wanted to be a riff on superheroes for kids to enjoy, or something a lot darker for adults; it was too tonally wobbly to be sure. Imagine if every episode of “Rosie and Jim” had a drive-by shooting or gangland drugs sub-plot in every episode, and you’ll get my point. Talking of shootings, I haven’t seen as many rounds of ammunition expended without anyone being severely injured or killed since the “A-Team”. I can accept that Meteor Man was a pretty tough dude, but I find it harder to accept that given the number of ricochets and potential ‘friendly fire” situations that must have occurred, that no one ever seem to get hurt. I’m pleased of course, after all I wouldn’t want anyone to be harmed by accident, but it was still quite surprising. The Golden Lords are one of the film’s highlights and clearly have a shit-hot marketing and image consultant within their ranks. Technically it’s fine for its time, the plot’s a bit silly (but hey, just roll with it), the script’s somewhat simplistic, and the acting’s a bit over the top but not so much that it spoils the vibe. I only got bored once or twice and not for long. It is pretty funny in places and a very easy watch. But it loses brownie points for having an anthropomorphised talking dog; I hate talking animals in films, especially dogs. It’s stupid. Really stupid. Of course I watched the full uncut version, not the Nannie State UK one with its missing 14 seconds. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.
