Společenská Helen nachází plné uspokojení v milostném poměru s ženatým Michaelem, Carol, která se straní mužů a lidí vůbec, pracuje jako manikérka. Když Helen odjede s milencem k moři, přestává se její osamělá sestra kontrolovat: omluví se z práce pro nemoc a uzavře se ve svém bytě, soužená hrůznými sexuálními sny... Režisér Polanski vytváří hororovou studii mentálního rozpadu osobnosti dívky, zatížené sexuálními zábranami. Snímek, který u nás nebyl nikdy uváděn, obsahuje drastické sekvence násilí a děsu, nikterak je však nekomentuje a neanalyzuje: kamera zachycuje děj tak, aby divák vnímal obraz z úhlu pohledu labilní Carol, a tak se stávají její hnus a samota také jeho hnusem a samotou. Šílenství se ve filmu nejeví jako osud jedince, nýbrž jako choroba celé společnosti. Film, který napsal sám Polanski se svým dvorním scenáristou Gérardem Brachem, získal na MFF v Berlíně 1965 Stříbrného medvěda.

- Gianni Cavuoto22. září 2025The very first installment of the Aprtment Trilogy" from Roman Polanski will keep you riveted and enthralled. The performances from all the actors are fantastic and the use of sound is quite unique in this film. If you don't hear it the first time around then go back and watch agian a little louder, it will come to you - no spoilers here my friends. In the end the story come to a head and leaves you wanting ..... I belive this is why it's a Trilogy. Technically is it still a Trilogy when there are 5 related movies and a TV show? I dunno, I just pose the question.....tell me what you think.

- Michael Foster9. března 2025The first Roman Polanski film of what later became known as ‘The Apartment Series’— Repulsion, which preceded Rosemary’s Baby, I just love. The grainy 16mm black/white shots, the staging, the music, the editing, specifically the sounds that are highlighted like a ticking clock or church bells, all to be tied-in later to trigger trauma. Today this would be completely scored over. Her hallucinations and dreams are so well constructed. If you’ve ever had night terrors where your surroundings are familiar but out of proportion, it’s spot on. The final film in the series is The Tenant, which stars Polanski himself. All three films tell the story of a character going mad within the confines of an apartment.
