His familiar strengths remain on the page, but their execution on screen never fully materializes. The film attempts a fast, Sorkin-style pace, but it feels restrained when compared to his earlier work. Sorkin’s writing often benefits from another filmmaker translating his dialogue into action, rhythm, and visual clarity. Even with Idris Elba and Jessica Chastain, the dialogue frequently feels unanchored, and the pacing never reaches the sharpness his material usually demands. Despite its shortcomings, the film is unmistakably Sorkin, for better and worse. And while it’s difficult to imagine this project in anyone else’s hands, it reinforces the sense that he remains a writer first.
