Port of Marseille, France, recently liberated from the German yoke. Behind Every Good Man is a Good Woman! But behind every fallen man is an even more fallen woman! That's essentially the message of this movie. Our male lead, a war hero, valiant and brave, rescues the eponymous Manon from being tried as a Nazi collaborator. He falls head over heels for her and supposedly vice versa but she, young and either stupid or narcissistic (I lean towards NPD or BPD) pursues questionable moral choices in Paris for money and pleasure dragging our male lead ever further down with her. They eventually have to flee and I suppose Manon does redeem herself somewhat by sticking by her man but given she's the sole cause of his predicament, it's hard to have sympathy for her. It's a love story but more of the car crash ilk than Casablanca. It's definitely different and the acting I thought was superb, if a little over the top as was common at the time, but it's a movie that will keep you watching just to see what will happen and how far Manon will drag her man down and what end they will face.
