this is my favorite movie of all time. the 80s aesthetic, the humor, the gore, the romance, the amazing music (original and brought in soundtrack), the costumes, the cinematography, the characters EVERYTHING!! this movie is such a beautiful story with a gorey romcom feel. i think it’s the perfect gothic love story and truly a masterpiece, i don’t care what anyone says i’ll recommend this movie until i die.

This movie is a fun throw back to John Hughes coming of age movies from the 80s, but with a refreshing horror twist.

Usual trash, but two main actresses are cute and the small gimmicks in the plot are nice. Otherwise DO NOT watch.

Neon, Goth and Members Only Solid script, 80’s nostalgia and some really fun humor made an otherwise uneven film, an entertaining watch. Lisa (Katheryn Newon) finds herself at a new school for her Senior year after her mother was killed by an axe murdered. Her father takes a new wife (Carla Gugino) and they move in with her and Lisa’s new step sister, Taffy (Liza Soberano). Largely an outcast, Lisa spends her time in an unkempt cemetery communing with the forgotten dead. She takes a certain affinity towards one that has a striking headstone and bears the name Frankenstein. And after wishing (in jest) she could be with him, a lightening strike reanimates Frankenstein directly into Lisa’s friend-zone. Lisa has a crush on the suave Michael Trent, but spends equal time helping Franky collect some of his missing body parts even though she doesn’t see him as a romantic interest. Michael’s got something that Franky doesn’t. There’s lots of funny moments, plenty of style, sew many needles drops and (literal) ear worms. That being said, the pacing feels uneven, in part, because of the sound design. There’s along stretches where it feels like there’s no score or backing track. When you add in that one of the main characters has zero dialogue, those stretches feel empty and make them seem longer than they actually are. For my taste, I would have preferred a much larger body count and more pronounced blood and gore. I had a good time, though, and there were enough sexual jokes to make my 13 y/o daughter really uncomfortable watching with us. Plus she got a Dune Popcorn bucket which is a sexual joke all on it’s own.

My quick rating - 5.5/10. In the delightful, genre-bending romp, director Zelda Williams takes us on a whimsical journey through 1989 with a unique twist on teenage romance. This film offers a quirky blend of dark comedy, horror, and heartfelt moments, making it a welcome entry in the contemporary revival of 80s nostalgia. The story follows Lisa (Kathryn Newton), a misunderstood high schooler whose life takes an extraordinary turn when she accidentally resurrects her crush, a handsome but decidedly dead heartthrob named Brad (Cole Sprouse). What follows is a hilariously macabre adventure as the newly animated couple navigates the pitfalls of young love while contending with the more practical issues of Brad's reanimated state, including the quest for a few missing body parts. Williams' direction shines in balancing the film's playful tone with its darker elements. The 80s setting is vibrantly brought to life with meticulous attention to detail, from the fashion and hairstyles to the pitch-perfect soundtrack that underscores the film's comedic beats. The use of period-appropriate music is particularly effective, enhancing the nostalgic ambiance and adding an extra layer of charm to the story. The film's quirky humor is one of its strongest suits, with Newton and Sprouse delivering endearing performances that capture the awkwardness and excitement of teenage puppy love. Their chemistry is palpable, and they both excel in scenes that require a blend of comedic timing and genuine emotion. Supporting characters add to the film’s charm, each bringing their own unique flair to the story’s zany proceedings. As expected, the film does stumble at times. The plot can feel somewhat disjointed, with certain scenes transitioning abruptly and a few subplots not fully developed. While the film's humor is mostly on point, some jokes fall flat or feel overly reliant on gross-out gags that might not appeal to all viewers. One standout scene involves Brad playing the piano with his reattached hand. The filmmakers' attention to detail caught me off guard, as the hand's coloration and makeup are impressively realistic, adding to the visual appeal and authenticity of the moment. It's little touches like these that made me appreciate this typical horror-comedy fare. It is a quirky and amusing film that offers a fresh take on the teenage romance genre through its blend of horror and comedy. While it has its flaws, the movie's charm, engaging performances, and nostalgic setting make it a fun watch for those looking to revisit the eccentric spirit of the 80s with a darkly humorous twist.

Lisa Frankenstein is a quirky romcom that has a few laughs but kind of stumbles towards the finish line with an overall uneven story that doesn’t really know what it wants to be.
