V bezpříběhové sondě do života „lepší společnosti“ předjímá Antonioni obecné pocity dneška. Jeanne Moreauová a Marcello Mastroianni v jedné ze svých nejnáročnějších rolí.

Love that isn’t there, suffering, existentialism, and three brilliant actors.

This film could not have a more fitting title. It is called "La notte" (The Night) because—on a superficial level—half of Antonioni’s work takes place during this time of day; yet, that explanation would be too simplistic. The film embodies "the night" because it portrays the moment when human relationships fall into crisis—as seen in the marriage of the writer Giovanni Pantani (played by the flawless Mastroianni) and his wife, Lidia. The crisis grips both partners as they drift through the night, their emotional connection steadily waning until it reaches a point of baffling indifference, particularly on Lidia's part. For the first time in ages, she decides to go out, testing the strength of her bond with Giovanni. At a nightclub, lost in thought as usual, she mentions a troubling idea that has been weighing on her all evening, though she cannot yet articulate exactly what it is. Later, upon arriving at the home of a wealthy industrialist who admires Giovanni’s work, it becomes clear that the couple is merely going through the motions. Lidia spends most of the time alone; although a man briefly makes a pass at her, she remains a woman marked by an inner sense of emptiness and oblivion. Giovanni, meanwhile, finds himself captivated by the host’s daughter, Valentina—played by the magnificent, magnetic Monica Vitti. She is a young woman who might appear superficial or foolish at first glance, yet possesses great depth. In conversation with Giovanni, she reveals that she does not consider herself intelligent at all, describing herself as a "good-for-nothing." A rapport develops between the two, yet Lidia remains unconcerned. As the sun rises, the reckoning of the night arrives, and Giovanni finds himself unable to bring himself to part ways with Lidia—even though she is already lost to him.
