The Good: The chemistry between the leads remains electric, specifically Danny DeVito and Danny Glover’s hilarious contributions to the avatar dynamics. The visual effects during the ostrich chase are impressively seamless, and the creative expansion of the game’s biomes keeps the world-building fresh and visually engaging. The Bad: However, the narrative follows the original's structure a bit too closely, leading to some predictable story beats. Certain emotional arcs feel rushed compared to the first film, and the pacing occasionally stumbles during the transition between the jungle and desert levels. Verdict: It’s a vibrant, high-energy adventure that proves this franchise still has plenty of life, even if the novelty is slightly wearing off.
- Shaydeknight25. října 2025I didn't expect to like Jumanji: The Next Level. After all, lightning rarely strikes twice, and the first film had already surprised me by being far better than it had any right to be. This one isn't quite the surprise its predecessor was, but it's a solid, entertaining sequel nonetheless. Once again, I wanted to dislike it but couldn't. The returning cast is still fun to watch, especially since the body-swapping mechanic lets them play different personalities this time around. Seeing actors like Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black stretch their performances in unexpected directions gives the film fresh energy. Kevin Hart dials things back a bit and gives a fantastic performance and Karen Gillan continues to be the effortlessly grounded centre of the chaos. And my personal favourite, Nick Jonas, brings a nice touch to the cast. Jake Kasdan, I think, doesn't get enough credit as a director. He pulls off three very difficult things here. First, he treats the Jumanji universe, including the original film (and arguably Zathura) with genuine respect. He expands the mythos without cheapening it. Case in point: bringing Bebe Neuwirth in to play Nora, again. Second, he crafts an original story that's nearly as compelling as the first, though I would have liked a bit more exposition about why there's another level at all. Third (and this is no small feat) he manages to get his actors to maintain completely recognizable character continuity throughout the film. That's incredibly tricky in a movie where personalities jump from body to body, yet he makes it all feel coherent and believable. The production values are strong: great set design, solid CGI (those mandrills were downright impressive), and some really noteworthy large-scale sequences. The addition of new players fits surprisingly well, considering who some of them are. No spoilers, but they add a lot more than just comic relief. All in all, The Next Level is a worthy follow-up. It's less surprising than Welcome to the Jungle, but still clever, funny, and full of charm. I had to like it, grudgingly.
