A hidden gem of a suspense/thriller in 2024. Sydney Sweeney plays an excellent character filled with paranoia, isolation, desperation and despair. The final 15 minutes with blow you away as well. One of the best of the year and one of the best "religious" horror films in a long time.

This was salvaged mostly by the ending that attempts to go full Isabelle Adjani Possession with Sweeney’s final scene. Loved that about it along with the practical gore. And while I liked the general premise, I came away feeling like most of this had one goal in mind, and that was to showcase Sweeney’s breasts without showing her breasts. I liked the Italian setting and the fact that a significant portion of this used Italian dialogue. It was a nice mechanism to separate and distance Cecilia from the rest of the pack and obfuscate to an extent the things that are happening around her. I’m probably giving some grace because I love religious horror—plus that ending really goes for it. But otherwise, I was actually a tad on the side of boredom watching this.

Immaculate is one of those movies that looks the part but completely forgets to be interesting. It is a real shame because Sydney Sweeney is genuinely fantastic here. She brings a level of intensity and grit that carries the burden of the film entirely on her own. She has made it perfectly clear that she is way beyond being just a celebrity casting; she is level with any actress in the industry today. I was honestly impressed by how she shines as a lead even without the nudity often associated with her other work, proving she has the range to command a screen on merit alone. She brings more heart and focus to this performance than the script ever manages to earn back, and it is honestly frustrating to see such a capable lead get stuck in a story that just goes through the motions. My biggest issue with the writing is that it feels like it was put together by an algorithm that only knows how to rehash tired anti-Catholic clichés. I am not asking for a movie that caters to my beliefs, but there is a clear difference between a dark, compelling story and a lazy one. Using Church traditions as a shortcut for evil has become so stale that it is hard not to roll your eyes when the latest scenes hit. Sweeney does her best to sell the material, but she is trapped in a landscape of predictable provocation that mistakes cynical tropes for actual storytelling. The film tries to leave you with some big, final shock to justify the runtime, but at that point, it’s just a desperate attempt to stick the landing after a fairly hollow experience.

Disturbing and unhinged, also strangely rewatchable for me.

Another religious horror movie from 2024 that is basic in execution but still watchable. This may be the only movie where Sydney Sweeney is not a droll, expressionless automaton. So, there's that. And I think it is better than The First Omen.

Good thriller movie. Of course I'm Bias because I love anything with Sydney Sweeney in it. It wasn't far off from what's going on today in current events. Satanist rule the world.

What a confusing film with so much squandered potential. It starts off rather slow but plodding, seemingly setting up this horrific foundation with social commentary on both the ills of organized religion and the lack of autonomy for women within such organizations. It has all the makings of a deep psychological horror in the vein of Rosemary's Baby or an Ari Aster film but it quickly goes to shit soon after it builds this very promising foundation. Sydney Sweeney gives a good performance though she definitely seems to be channeling her roles in Handmaid's Tale and as Reality. She's sweet, naive and well intentioned but thrusted into a terrible situation where she has little to no control. She ends up subverting this veil of naivety by the end and giving a truly memorable effort. However, Immaculate is ultimately let down by its direction. There are so many terrible choices made midway through the film which favor silly entertainment rather than provoking thought. The plot is full of red herrings and several themes are abandoned entirely in lieu of making the biggest, easiest choices. It relies on incessant jump scares to generate horror rather than believing in and fleshing out its terrifying beginning premise. The director also decides to show too much at times when just an allusion would serve the film better by keeping the shroud of mystery intact. For example I don't think we need to see the father's lab, it comes off quite cheesy and like something out of B-horror. The ending is visceral and raw, but feels hamfisted and unearned. And thus, the film feels like it has multiple discordant identities. Does it want to be Malignant or does it want to be Rosemary's Baby?

My quick rating - 6.2/10. Immaculate is one of those horror flicks that walks a fine line between “that was surprisingly effective” and “who allowed that scene to make the final cut?” Thankfully, it lands more in the former category, especially thanks to a killer final act that actually had the guts to go there. Honestly, I was hovering in the mid-5 range for most of it, but those last few minutes sealed the deal and nudged it up to a 6.2. Bonus points for committing to an ending most studios would have chickened out of. Sydney Sweeney stars as Cecilia, a devout American nun who relocates to a remote convent in the idyllic Italian countryside. You know, the type of place where horror movies always happen, but everyone still pretends it is peaceful. I’ll admit, I had a hard time buying Sweeney as a nun at first, especially after recently watching her in Madame Web. It’s not that she can’t act — quite the opposite — it’s just that my brain wasn’t ready to see her in full holy attire. But to her credit, she wears the role (and the habit) convincingly, and before long, I forgot the initial awkwardness and let her performance take the wheel. She nails the character with a sincerity that keeps the movie grounded, even when things get…well, biblically insane. The film itself is an interesting cocktail of sharp direction and questionable choices. Director Michael Mohan (who clearly enjoyed working with Sweeney after The Voyeurs) shows a strong eye for atmosphere. The camera work is clean, deliberate, and often eerily beautiful. When the movie leans into blood and body horror, it delivers with gusto. But then there are moments that made me wonder if someone accidentally shuffled in deleted scenes from a lesser film. A few shots or reactions could’ve easily been left on the editing room floor, but alas, here they are, preserved for our collective head-shaking. Plot-wise, if you haven’t already cracked the title, Cecilia is chosen by the convent for an “immaculate conception.” Naturally, because this is a horror movie, this is less “holy miracle” and more “waking nightmare,” and watching her grapple with that twisted responsibility is where the film shines. Rather than drowning itself in cheap jump scares, it keeps them to a minimum and lets the dread build through story and performance. It’s refreshing, honestly. In the end, Immaculate is a surprisingly enjoyable blend of restraint and excess, measured in tone but unafraid to get nasty when it counts. It’s not flawless, but it is committed, and that counts for a lot in modern horror. Sydney Sweeney carries it harder than I expected, the direction holds tight, and that ending alone is worth the price of admission.

A very intense watch and crazy twist with today’s worldview of religion and science. Hit way home hard especially because I was born and raised catholic. Absolutely recommend it!!!!!!
