Hostel vypráví příběh dvou kamarádů z americké vysoké školy, kteří se v touze po netradičních zážitcích vydají na cestu napříč Evropou – s tím, že pokud jim zůstane místo vzpomínek jen jedno obrovské okno, nebude je to nijak zvlášť mrzet. V průběhu výletu se k nim připojuje Islanďan Oli, jenž oba dobrodruhy přemluví, aby zamířili na místo, které je považováno za opravdové nebe všech amerických turistů – do jisté ubytovny v odlehlém slovenském městě plném zoufalých, ale zároveň překrásných východoevropských dívek. Když se ihned po příjezdu bez problémů seznámí s dvojicí místních krásek, zjistí, že Oli nelhal. Zdánlivě pohodový běh událostí však brzy vystřídá kruté procitnutí. Oba cestovatelé si uvědomí, že se rychle noří do čím dál tím děsivější situace, která je stejně nebezpečná a temná jako nejzvrácenější zákoutí lidské duše.
