Yeah, so sharks neither behave nor move like that, and they don't just constantly feed simply because food is available. They get full! At least in Deep Blue Sea the behavioural anomalies were explained with the lab-enhanced intelligence aspect of the narrative. Oh yeah, and in this scenario they wouldn't be makos. In open water like that you will see more oceanic white tips than anything else. There was absolutely zero reason for Angus Sampson to have a terrible seppo accent when it was an international flight with multiple characters from different countries. Ok look, it's not the worst movie, not even the worst b-grade shark movie. It's just a shame when it clearly had a decent budget and several seasoned actors, but the script is what made it ridiculous. Suspension of disbelief is one thing, but c'mon now. There was no reason to have any romantic subplots (one of which just springs up out of nowhere!) and the musical cues are so hokey as to be laughable. How are there people on IMDB giving this anything above 3 stars? Are there seriously that many easily impressed morons in the world? Maybe I could understand a 4 or 5 if people are just like "Meh, remove brain and enjoy" but give this anywhere from 7 to 10 stars us a joke. They have to be cast and crew members trying to boost the rating.

I"m being generous here with the extra half star, but honestly, this wasn't terribad. I mean it's not Oscar winning masterpiece of cinema, but it's enjoyable. There's reviews that are bitching because the sharks don't do what the sharks in this movie do. Spoiler alert, neither do Great Whites like what Jaws portrayed. If you really want to complain about authenticity here's the real gripe: the sharks in the movie are portrayed as Makos which are known to be solitary and don't form hunting packs. Further Makos are largely not aggressive to humans. Further, Makos are built for speed and prefer fast prey like Tuna or Swordfish. So the choice of Makos here is clearly just for cinematic "coolness" due to the actual size and speed. Tiger Sharks, or better yet Ocean Whitetip would have been a better choice here as they are oppurtunistic Sharks and they also just so happen to school up. The issue isn't that Sharks don't do what the Sharks in this movie did, it's that Makos wouldn't do this. The tragedy of the USS Indianapolis spells that out plainly. My only actual gripe is concerning a piece of the plane that's underwater. That exact scene was done somewhere else, I forget where. Dollars to donuts it was ripped off for this. Beyond the poor choice in Shark species and the story element I feel was ripped off from another movie, it's a decent 106 minutes. Don't know that I'd bother watching it again, but it does have one really satifying moment towards then end. When you watch it, pretty sure you'll agree with me on that fact. Watch it or skip it? I'd honestly say "watch it" then move on.

Deep Water is another failed attempt at making a good shark movie. Positives: - The practical sets and explosions were really solid - The kills were bloody, brutal, and entertaining - There were a couple solid chase sequences Mixed: - The characters were whatever - The performances were fine at best Negatives: - Some of the character decisions were infuriating - There were way too many survivors by the end of the movie - The CGI for the sharks did not look good - The movie is just another shark flick that doesn’t take any risks or do anything even remotely memorable Overall Deep Water was just another bad Shark movie that I don’t recommend to anyone.

I love every kind of shark movie and Renny Harlin action but I watched this one, especially to see that SOB eaten by the sharks.

More like Hungry Hungry Sharkos, amirite Run of the mill disaster flick but with some decent kills and gore, though it all could have been better. Also, I don’t know how to rate this film. It makes me think I overrated some of the past week’s films bc THIS is a 2 / 2.5 star movie What the fuck were with the subtitles during a clearly discernible karaoke version of “Fly Me to the Moon” but not any of the incomprehensible shit Ben Kingsley was saying in the cockpit? They were so weird lol You really need the captain to tell you to put out a fire!? Also, I’m good on hearing the word ‘captain’ for the rest of May, if not 2026 Currently Ranked #42/63 in 2026 Ranked Added to 24 Hour Movie People

Pretty entertaining, even if it's not exactly a great movie. The first half is definitely the better part, especially the plane crash and the setup afterwards. Once the sharks show up, there are some fun kills and enough action to keep things going. The cast is a bit of a mixed bag too. The bigger names and the kids are fine, but some of the other performances aren't great. The second half gets pretty ridiculous, though. The plot starts falling apart, the shark stuff gets more and more silly, and there are quite a few moments that make you go "yeah, sure." Angus Sampson is actually pretty fun as the villain at first, but he's basically one of those old-school, almost cartoonish villains who has absolutely no chill. The effects look a little rough in places too, but if you just want some dumb shark action, it does the job. Not great, but I had fun with it.

If your looking for a movie that showcases what is possible when you get an amazing script, some truly breathtaking performances, and then rich clean visuals then you have definitely come to the WRONG place. Its not often I'm watching something whileI literally counting down the minutes til I get the sweet release of closing credits.

My quick rating - 5.7/10. Sometimes a movie jumps up my watchlist based on nothing more than the name behind the camera. That was absolutely the case with Deep Water. As soon as I saw it was directed by Renny Harlin, the man who brought me a couple of my favorites, Die Hard 2 and Cliffhanger, this went from a casual "I'll get around to it eventually" to "alright, let's see what you've got." Instead of immediately tossing us into screaming passengers and flying debris, Deep Water takes a surprisingly calm approach. We spend a little time with pilots Ben (Aaron Eckhart) and Rich (Ben Kingsley), getting a glimpse into their everyday lives before disaster strikes. Well, "everyday" might be stretching things when one of those scenes involves karaoke, but close enough. We also meet several passengers, and veteran disaster movie fans will quickly start making predictions about who is going to survive and who is being introduced purely as future shark food. The racist bully, the rude guy shoving through lines, the people who instantly trigger your internal "yeah, that one's not making it" alarm. Once the emergency landing begins, Harlin delivers exactly what you hope for. The crash sequence looks great. The tension ramps up nicely. And the aftermath feels quite chaotic. We get a good mix of survivors, injuries, panic, and those souls floating face down. The film does a good job making the situation feel dangerous without turning everything into relentless misery. (If you look at the trailer still image here, I am pretty sure they cut that silly-looking scene.) The sharks themselves are surprisingly convincing. Yeah, they're CGI, but they avoid that distracting rubbery look that sinks these kinds of movies. Every dip below the surface kept me glued because you never know if someone is gonna climb back onto the wreckage or become an all-you-can-eat seafood buffet. The movie repeatedly gives that false sense of safety before reminding you that hundreds of sharks did not gather here for sightseeing. One thing I could not stop noticing was the miraculous durability of everyone's phones. I don't think I've ever seen so many people carrying expensive devices that can survive repeated underwater adventures and still function perfectly afterward. Forget the sharks, apparently the real science fiction element was the battery life. Even though Deep Water mostly revolves around the sharks, the movie is actually a survival-action film rather than a horror. The focus is on the cooperation of the passengers, coping with the situation, and staying alive long enough for a rescue. The end does turn out to be rather typical for Hollywood movies, but Harlin embraces that choice with confidence You've seen movies like Deep Water before, no question about it. The idea is far from groundbreaking. What I appreciated is that when the movie decides to be intense, it fully commits to that mission for 106 minutes. No unnecessary detours. No long stretches of boredom. Just a disaster movie that understands exactly what it wants to be and keeps its foot on the gas all the way to the credits.

Don't let the 3 star rating fool you. This movie is a blast. It does exactly what you would expect based on the description. It was better than I was expecting, and very entertaining. Eckhart proving himself, once again, very capable of leading a movie with a good degree of pathos and emotional work. The supporting cast are committed and almost uniformly good, let down by some weak writing occasionally, but nothing awful. A good, small scale, disaster movie. Gore warning: there is some, of course, but it's not dwelt on. This is more a thriller than a gore-fest.

It's an emotional roller-coaster somewhat with that tired and true "shark eats people" montra with excessive screaming. The plane crash was epic, intense and effective in portraying a scary thing that doesn't happen often. There's the guy that deserves to be eaten, there's teen romance, there's sacrifice that really didn't hit hard, pretty generic run of the mill "shark eats people" movie. Actor Aaron does a fantastic job as usual, and I must say, these are some REALLY aggressive sharks, to the point where you will shake your head a couple times. It's a fun popcorn movie, turn your brain off for almost 2 hours but that's about it.
