- jackmeat25. prosince 2025My quick rating - 8.5/10. How I have never actually reviewed National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation before is beyond me, especially considering this thing has been burned into my DNA through decades of annual rewatches. And when I say “classic,” I don’t mean polite, background-noise classic. I mean full-blown, never-gets-old, laugh-even-though-you-know-the-punchline-is-coming classic. This is assuming, of course, you appreciate the finely tuned chaos of John Hughes’ writing and a cast that could sell a joke with a raised eyebrow and a well-timed glance. So another year, another rewatch, this time with notes, a cold beer, and a renewed appreciation for just how perfectly unhinged this movie really is. The Griswold family’s plan for a big, wholesome Christmas predictably collapses within minutes, starting with the ill-advised family trip to cut down a “little” Christmas tree. From there, the film just keeps stacking disasters like Clark stacks extension cords. One-liners, slapstick, visual gags - it’s all here, deployed so effortlessly it feels almost unfair to other comedies. The house-lighting scene alone could fuel a dozen holiday traditions, and that bit with Clark hiding the present still lands every single time. I could honestly list scenes all day and not run out. Then there’s the pool fantasy sequence, which somehow manages to be both iconic and completely devoid of nudity, a minor miracle that speaks volumes about Chevy Chase’s commitment to physical comedy and Jeremiah S. Chechik’s pitch-perfect direction. It doesn’t hurt that Nicolette Scorsese’s appearances, both at the store and poolside, are seared into cinematic, we'll call it, history. Chase’s Clark Griswold is a man powered entirely by optimism, denial, and the belief that his Christmas bonus will fix everything. This is easily my favorite of all the Vacation films, and the supporting cast is a huge reason why. Beverly D’Angelo’s Ellen is the calm eye in the storm, Juliette Lewis and Johnny Galecki are perfectly cast as the perpetually confused Griswold kids, and there’s a delightful pre-Friends sighting of Julia Louis-Dreyfus as the aggressively judgmental neighbor. Clark’s bad luck escalates daily, especially once the extended family arrives, but he soldiers on, clinging to the promise of that bonus like it’s a sacred relic. And then Uncle Eddie shows up. If you’ve seen the first Vacation, you know exactly the flavor of insanity Randy Quaid brings to the table. And yes, the sledding scene remains an all-timer, physics be damned. By the time Christmas Eve rolls around, the movie is firing jokes at machine-gun speed, including Aunt Bethany’s cat-related “gift,” which ends in one of the darkest, funniest sight gags ever put in a holiday movie. When the bonus finally arrives, if you think it’s going to end well, you clearly haven’t been paying attention. I mean, it wouldn’t be Christmas Vacation if the Chicago SWAT team didn’t get involved. If you somehow haven’t seen this movie yet, you truly don’t know what you’re missing. Forever a staple of my annual Christmas viewing - and it probably should be in yours too.
- Bobby25. prosince 2025A goddamn classic.
- Matthew James27. prosince 2024A must watch every year.
- Steve Rogan25. prosince 2025The greatest Christmas film of all time
- trrs25. prosince 2025MERRY CHRISTMAS!
- Manuel Frangis22. března 2025I just watched Christmas Vacation again and I give it 5 out of 5 stars. This movie is a total classic and still one of the funniest holiday comedies ever made. It has everything you could want in a Christmas movie. Wild family chaos, great characters, hilarious moments, and a ton of heart underneath all the insanity. The story follows Clark Griswold trying to give his family the perfect Christmas. Of course, this being a Vacation movie, nothing goes according to plan. What starts as a wholesome holiday idea turns into complete madness with surprise guests, broken decorations, non stop bad luck, and one disaster after another. It is the perfect mix of relatable holiday stress and totally exaggerated comedy. Chevy Chase is amazing as always. Clark Griswold is one of his best roles and he nails every part of this character. Whether he is decorating the house, dealing with annoying relatives, or trying to stay positive through all the chaos, he brings so much energy and perfect timing to every scene. The way he holds it all together while slowly losing his mind is what makes it so funny. Beverly D’Angelo is great as Ellen. She is the calm in the storm, but she still gets in plenty of funny moments. The whole extended family adds even more to the chaos, and every character brings something to the table. Whether it is the grandparents arguing, the surprise guests showing up at the worst time, or Cousin Eddie doing literally anything, you are guaranteed to laugh. Cousin Eddie is one of the funniest characters in movie history. Every scene he is in is gold. He is completely clueless but somehow always makes things worse in the best possible way. Randy Quaid plays him perfectly and he steals every scene he shows up in. The humor is exactly what it should be. It is a mix of slapstick, awkward moments, and holiday disasters. There is never a dull moment. Whether Clark is getting electrocuted by Christmas lights, losing his patience, or delivering one of the most legendary rants in comedy history, the movie just keeps throwing hilarious moment after hilarious moment at you. The pacing is perfect. There is never a slow spot and the jokes just keep coming. It moves from one wild situation to the next and somehow it all comes together in a way that feels just right. Even though things go completely off the rails, it still feels like a real family trying to get through the holidays together. The reason I give it 5 out of 5 stars is because it just gets everything right. It is hilarious, rewatchable, and somehow still manages to sneak in a little bit of real holiday spirit. Underneath all the chaos and comedy, there is a real message about family and what the holidays are really about. The soundtrack is also great. The music fits perfectly with the vibe of the movie and helps make the big moments even better. It adds a festive energy that makes the whole thing feel like a proper Christmas classic. Overall Christmas Vacation is one of the best Christmas comedies ever made. It is loud, funny, chaotic, and completely unforgettable. Clark Griswold’s breakdowns, Cousin Eddie’s disasters, and the nonstop Christmas madness make this a must watch every single year. I absolutely love it and I will be watching it every holiday season without fail.
