Režie: Stuart RosenbergAutobus přiváží do státní věznice novou várku trestanců. Otřesné podmínky a poměry, které ve věznici panují, zajímají jednoho z nováčků. Po nějaké době jsou všichni v šoku – právě on se představí jako nový ředitel věznice. Vzdělaný a zásadový Henry Brubaker zahájí boj se systémem, v němž vedoucí pracovníci zneužívali svého postavení k osobnímu obohacování a vytvořili krutý vnitřní řád: znepřátelili vězně mezi sebou rozkastováním na bezprávné a mocí nad spoluvězni obdařené loajální „pomocníky“. Brubaker, zprvu podporovaný guvernérem, usiluje o reformu s cílem, aby trest skutečně sloužil k nápravě vězňů. Postupně získává na svoji stranu vězně i některé pracovníky bývalého vedení. Vyvolá však odpor těch, kteří dosud těžili z privilegií, ale i státní komise pro vězeňství, prolezlé politikařením. Dramatické události, které tím vyvolá, vedou k vyhrocení situace…

Robert Redford delivers one of his most compelling performances as Henry Brubaker, a reform-minded warden whose undercover entry into the fictitious Wakefield State Prison exposes cruelty, exploitation, and systemic rot. Redford captures the full emotional spectrum: rage at the injustice, anger at the indifference, a fierce desire for reform, and ultimately the crushing sense of powerlessness that comes with pushing against an entrenched, corrupt system. The film doesn’t rely on sensationalism; instead, it builds its impact through quiet horror and moral clarity, making the audience feel every moment of outrage and frustration. Brubaker remains a sobering, socially conscious drama that still resonates today.
