Incredible tension and drama, outstanding cast. Probably Ed Harris’s greatest roles. RIP Bill Paxton. Personally I was rooting for Hanks to get a third consecutive best actor Oscar, but he didn’t get the nom. This is one of my comfort movies though.

It’s one of those rare movies where it feels almost redundant to praise it, because nearly everything that can be said already has been — and yet it still deserves saying again. The cast is uniformly excellent, but it’s hard not to single out Tom Hanks, who brings a calm, grounded authority to Jim Lovell that anchors the entire film. That said, this is very much an ensemble triumph. For me, this was the film that made Gary Sinise stand out — back when recognising an actor meant memory rather than a quick Google search. His performance quietly cements the human stakes behind the technical problem-solving. What really elevates Apollo 13 is how it balances spectacle with process. Yes, space is vast and terrifying, but the film never forgets that the real drama is procedural: engineers with slide rules, astronauts with dwindling options, and teams under pressure making the least-worst decisions possible. It also helped cement my own fascination with space, systems, and safety culture — something that, knowing what I do for a living, feels very much like a straight line from this film. It’s obviously dramatised, but by all accounts it stays impressively close to the real events, at least in spirit. And that’s what matters here: the truth of the situation, the teamwork, and the razor-thin margins. Two things worth stating plainly: Even if you don’t care about space or science, this is still worth watching purely for the story and performances. This is a five-star film only because the scale doesn’t go higher — it earns every bit of praise it’s ever received. 🥃 Pairing: A strong black coffee or a neat whiskey — something steady, grounding, and quietly respectful of the seriousness of the moment.

„Nejúspěšnější neúspěšná“ akce v dějinách americké astronautiky se odehrála ve dnech 11. až 17. dubna 1970. Tehdy po pečlivých přípravách, zcela bez povšimnutí veřejnosti, která už podobné lety brala jako samozřejmost, vystartovala k měsíci posádka Apolla 13. První dny letu proběhly hladce, ale pak se z reproduktorů v řídícím středisku ozvalo legendární „Houstone, máme problém.“ Explodovala jedna z nádrží s kyslíkem a poškodila přitom druhou. Začal klesat tlak, objevily se potíže se spojením. Posádka pochopila, že jejich sen, stanout na povrchu Měsíce, je ztracen a změnil se v bitvu o život. Aby ušetřili vzduch, přesunou se astronauti do přistávacího modulu a pokouší se udržet loď ve směru. V Houstonu je rozhodnuto využít pro návrat gravitační sílu Měsíce, a tak astronauty čeká nesmírně obtížný, ne-li nemožný úkol. Obletět s těžce poškozenou lodí Měsíc, vrátit se k Zemi a bezpečně přistát. Celý svět se zatajeným dechem sleduje drama odehrávající se daleko za hranicemi zemské atmosféry.
