Boasting a remarkably solid cast and truly phenomenal performances across the board, 12 Years a Slave easily stands as one of my absolute favorite films. Steve McQueen delivers a masterfully crafted, brilliantly executed adaptation of Solomon Northup's autobiographical book of the same name. If you haven't seen it yet, it is an absolute must watch.
- Jay Marie Bailey7. července 2026A star studded adaptation of the book of the same name, though the movie is marginally better than most adaptations I'd personally say the book gives a better insight into what Solomon witnessed & suffered. It is brutal and unrelenting in the message it is delivering, there isn't and shouldn't be any apology for that.. The cinematography is epic as is the score (Hans Zimmer). The story is thought provoking to say the least, given that we are coming up to near on 200 years since the events taking place how far has humanity come? If you haven't watched this I strongly recommend especially if you have never suffered any kind of discrimination.
- Adam Abaza10. února 2026The film is powerful because it presents slavery in a raw and painful way, without embellishment or downplaying. The suffering isn't just physical, but psychological and human, evident in the characters' expressions and their silence before they even speak. Chiwetel Ejiofor's performance is incredibly moving, supported by strong performances, especially from Michael Fassbender and Lupita Nyong'o. The direction is calm yet brutal, sometimes leaving the camera static to force you to confront the pain without escapism. The minimal music enhances the sense of suffering, making it feel real and immediate.

Přesně to se v roce 1841 přihodilo Američanu Solomonu Northupovi, který svůj skutečný příběh zachytil v autobiografické knize 12 Years a Slave. Solomon měl smůlu, že byl… černoch. Dva únosci ho pod příslibem houslového melouchu vylákali do Washingtonu, kde Solomon po první noci skončil spoutaný v řetězech. V následujících dnech byl prodán do otroctví na americkém Jihu. Ocitl se ve zlém snu, který potrvá dalších dvanáct let. Za těch dvanáct let potká Solomona snad všechno, co černého otroka potkat mohlo. „Hodný" otrokář. Krutý otrokář. Dřina na bavlníkových plantážích. Pokus o lynčování. Bičování. Psychický teror. Neúspěšné pokusy o útěk. Víra ve svobodu a pomoc.
