After being shipwrecked in Tonga in the year 1770, Jess is nursed back to health by a local tribe. Upon recovering, Jess becomes fascinated with the local culture, and befriends a young man named Tuku. Events take an unexpected turn when English missionaries arrive preaching their interpretation of the word of God that is misinterpreted by the local people.
